Slip Dresses?

Hello,
Slip dresses seem to be back, I liked them in the 90's, but never got one then.
So, I would like to get one for an upcoming beach vacation, but I have a couple of reservations:
Do they look like nightgowns? I have seen several that remind me strongly of a silk nightgown I once had.
Most have spaghetti straps and very open backs, so I guess wearing a bra is not possible. I have nipple-cover-petal-thingies, so I could use those, but I'm not sure I feel really comfortable being so exposed.
Does the slippery fabric accentuate every lump and bump?

For example, I like this one, which I would get shortened to just past knee length:

Knee jerk reaction is that this dress, shortened, would indeed remind me if s negligee. Maybe it'll all be in the styling and where you wear it, though. Would a shift dress in cotton or linen not work for your occasion?

I am pretty lumpy, and I find these (cut on the bias) to accentuate lumps and bumps. They have to fit just right and often only look good when you're standing. But the right one could be gorgeous! I'd look for one with a lining to give it something to cling to besides you. I feel pretty exposed in these, plus I need a bra and that's too much of a struggle for me...

I do like slip dresses, perhaps a pattern would help with the lumps and bumps and feel less like a nightie.

I love how the dresses are now styled, over a thin gauge turtleneck or even a chiffon blouse to increase the versatility.

I like them, can't wear most because the straps fall. They also totally show every lump and bump and *do* look like nighties to most everyone. Still...high cool factor.

The fabric usually shows (and highlights) every lump or bump. Even wearing petals under a dress like this would likely show the outline of the petals. Plus, I can't help but see them as nighties. YMMV.

It's the combination of the shiny fabric with the bias cut that causes it to show everything. The nature of the beast. I marvel at those 1930 evening dresses made this way and the women who managed to wear them.

I think if you're going to wear a dress like this, you have to be OK with the fact that many people will see "nightgown" in it. Because, you know, It's basically the same garment with a different name and somewhat different fabric.

Too make a dress like this work, I'd either need something like spanx underneath (which would negate the wearing it in a hot climate part), or it would need to have more going on in terms of pattern or texture/folds or an interior form fitting lining that wouldn't get too warm.

If you can wear it and it works on your body with lighter underthings (and is cut in the back so you could wear a strapless bra) I think a tropical/beach vacation would be an ideal place to wear it in the evening.

Minnie, for me yes it would be too much like a nightie and I am shapely so I think I would feel too exposed in something like this. However it was used as the base for layering other pieces then it could work.

I'm with rabbit in that I would probably wear Spanx underneath. I think that even movie stars who are next to perfect with regard to their physique wear Spanx under stuff like this.

I don't know that I see "nightgown." I think that if you accessorize right, it will take it out of nightgown territory. I think you just have to trust your instincts on that, since every gown will be different.
