Sling bag trend

Hi fabbers,

My black leather crossbody is ready to be retired. I wanted to branch out and am thinking of this black leather slingbag...its 40% off.

Are slingbags on their way out? Do we think it will look dated quickly?

Torn between this and going with a like for like replacement with another black crossbody. I am in my 50s.

ANM, I am 59 and all my bags are now crossbody because I walk with a forearm crutch (or two).

I think this style has now become sort of immune to looking wildly dated.

For me, I’m not as concerned about bags being on-trend as much as usable and fitting the vibe I want. Lately my very structured, boxy bags, and my satchels and shoulder bags have been going unused and I’ve been using my backpacks, sling bag and crossbody bags, in softer leathers and slouchier styles. I think if this suits how you use and enjoy your bags, that’s the most important thing. I really like those styles and think they’re pretty timeless. I was actually eyeing the Carla Rockmore sling bag (my niece is obsessed and I’m thinking of getting it for her for Christmas), but it’s a bit big for what I want. The size of the one you post is really nice.

Good point Janet -- i have been eyeing the Rebecca Minkoff Julian bag and noticed it comes in crossbody style now... maybe i will get both and then decide.

I find it so hard to evaluate bags until I handle them in person! Some openings are uncomfortably tight or stiff with zippers that feel rough on the hands, and some bags look big or soft enough online but feel wrong when I finally handle them. Good luck!

ANewMindset I'm SO glad I read this post ... I have been looking for a crossbody in dark brown and the Rebecca M Julian bag just might be the one! I've always loved her quality and vibe but most of the ones I've seen have silver hardware which is a deal breaker for me. I had not seen this style in my shopping travels. Thanks for posting!

100% what Janet said. Does the bag hold what you need, is it comfortable to wear, easy to get in and out of? That for me is the #1 issue.

Will this style look dated, probably in a year or 2 it won’t look current, but if it works for you will it matter?

p.s. yes to what Janet & kkards said - make sure the bag works for you functionally and feels good before looking at any other considerations. For example I have a smaller black cross body I love but don't use much in winter because my gloves and hat don't fit in it - I switch to a diff bag in winter. It's a "camera bag" style - more structured and classic than the slingbag you are considering FWIW. I also don't think your age matters one bit - choose what you like.

I think/hope they are here to stay. Such a versatile style, and the wide mouth makes it easy to reach inside ( but is not so deep that you lose your keys). I like the ability to change the strap, but that may not matter to you.

There's something about the softer leathers and slouchier designs that just feels right, you know? I have a few structured bags that are collecting dust now because I keep reaching for my more relaxed pieces. I've been eyeing the Carla Rockmore sling bag too!

Use whatever works best for your needs. Most people do not notice bags. So they do not date. Went through a period of clutches to stay in my lap while eating out. Also they were not forgotten that way as anything hung on the chair often was. Now I use two bags… crossbody for essentials and a large bag white masks and tissues that can be lost, also worn crossbody or on the arm.

Almost 2 years on and my Uniqlo half moon bag is in steady use. It’s inexpensive, washable, lightweight, and so easy to use. Holds a lot too.

The DS’s each have one (one green, one orange) and prefer using them to having their wallet and keys in pockets.

If my memory serves me correctly, men and women (boys and girls) started wearing waist bags/fanny packs slung across their bodies in the early 2020’s or maybe a little earlier. The Uniqlo half moon bag went viral in 2021 and, correct me if I’m wrong, but BoF noted the bag in their top 10 trends report for that year.

This style of bag still seems to be very much in use today.

Third opinion on that Uniqlo bag.
Agree that it is roomy, comfortable to carry and stylish. Only downside is things tend to settle to the bottom.
Pouches help with this.
Crossbody bags for me all the time.
As Angie and others have said:
Dated is so dated! Wear what works for you.
