Slimming Horizontal Stripes????

I am also puzzled by the phenomena but it's true. I love this top because it is slimming, and it just happens to be a horizontal stripe. Ironically I realize I have never experienced this with a vertical stripe. I am learning that fit/cut matters the most when shopping (over color and pattern), because fit seems to govern the silhouette -- flattering or not so flattering

I am waiting for the locksmith to arrive so I figured I would indulge in my favorite past time. I apologize for the lack of make up but you know what I look like by now.

I also did not add much in the way of jewelry or accessories because I did not want to mess up or distract from the slimming effect.

So I am posting this in honor of all you YLF women out there who think they can't wear a stripe. Yes we can! (Do you agree?)

Wow, this does look great on you DV. And I think you are right on exactly that the shape of the garment trumps any pattern. The neckline of this shirt as well as the broken up pattern of the stripes also increases the flattery quotient.

Admittedly, stripes are not my best look. I have broad shoulders and stripes just seem to accentuate my rectangliness!

Oh I agree with you whole heartedly, this is really slimming! I haven't found a vertical stripe that looks flattering on me either and you're right, the fit comes first on my list too and it's only recently that I've been able to ignore a gorgeous pattern for lack of fit!

DV, you know I adore that shirt (since we are shirt twins)!!! I think it looks phenomenal on you. It is a magic shirt for me--it seems to make my inverted triangle shape look curvy and create a waist out of nothing. On you, well, it takes phenomenal and bumps it up to 11!

Fab! I love it, and I agree it is so flattering. I knew to look for thinner stripes, but I never thought about thinner stripes combined with thick ones. Fun!!

DV, this is a perfect horizontal stripe. I have just recently realized the same thing as you, anyone can wear stripes given the right fabrication and cut. Well done, I really enjoy your WIWs, they inspire me. You have such an ease with your style.

June Bug -- am learning too that pretty patterns have to fit well and even a not so thrilling pattern looks better when it fits well. Fit definitely turns a maybe into a yes -- I'll take it.

Rae -- you make a great point, thick and thin stripes have a different effect than a single slim stripe -- I think that is one of the major benefits of this particular print. Now I need to look for shirts with thick AND thin stripes.

It IS very slimming and flattering. I think the cut and fit of an item usually matters more than the pattern. I have a striped sweater that is fairly body-con and that helps to counteract any widening effect the stripes might have. I had (past tense!) a vertically striped button front shirt and it felt less flattering than my sweater.

You're right it does look great! I think the stripe variation highlights your waist, which gives it the slimming effect. And even though it's B&W it's dominantly black which is also slimming. Looking fab as usual!

It does look good! And vertical stripes are so misleading, at least in tops, and to a lesser extent on trousers. They can't possibly stay vertical on the body and definitely not on an hourglass figure! Whereas horizontal stripes can fit and flare.

Yep, it's counter intuitive, but horizontal stripes actually are usually more slimming than vertical, contrary to popular wisdom. I can say first hand, with a spandex referee shirt for work, that this is in fact true!!

Very slimming! I love this look on you. I think it's the way the stripes are not uniform. I rarely wear stripes for this reason, as well as not being able to fit them into my style - but wow, you look amazing!

The top with your glasses is just fantastic. I have also been surprised how some horizontal stripes can be flattering and others awful. You are absolutely right - it is all in the fit and cut and this one is amazing on you!
