Sleeveless Jacket Laid Flat

Evening All

Amiable asked if i could post pics of the navy sleeveless topper laid flat from my recent thread, http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/wdyt So I thought I would post in new thread incase anyone else was interested.

I have also taken pics of the black one I bought (which inspired the navy) laying flat.

Thanks Deb! how interesting. I guessed the navy shape and the black one has a collar from the upper curve. Thanks for showing these.

Diane, the black one has a collar from the upper curve, but the navy one has not curve at the top. It is straight, so creates a similar collared look, but doesn't 'waterfall'.

Ceit, it was fun. The black one was retailing at full price for $110.00 and I bought it on sale for $45.00. The one I made cost about $14.00 for the fabric and about an hour and a half of my time. Nice profit margin:) Perhaps I should start an Esty store lol.

What kind of felt did you find? Do you have to reinforce the armholes with stitching?

The felt I bought is not quite as soft as the felt one I bought. It is better quality than that which children use to pin on boards, but that's all I can tell you. I can't quite remember what was on the tag at the fabric store. I haven't reinformed the armholes... yet. I realise I may need to. The bought topper doesn't look like it has been reinforced but when run you fingers along it does feel like it has 'finished' somehow, almost like it has been 'melted'??? Not sure how best to describe it. I am keen to do a bit more research, as I am thinking this overall concept could be translated to drapey dresses and tunics.

Are the armholes of the half-circle one are off to one side? (I'm thinking no, but just checking).

I think you can achieve that "melted" quality in the fabric if it has a high acrylic content by using a hot knife. I would try putting an exacto blade on to a soldering iron and use it to cut/finish in one swipe. I've seen it work brilliantly on the gauzy/thin acrylics also (but they're not very breathable, which makes them hard to wear, IMO).

You can probably reinforce the armholes by stitching around them with a matching color - a half cm from the edge or so - the thread should sink in and disappear. Try either a straight stitch or a zig-zag.

This would be really terrific in boiled wool felt too. Though I don't think the edges would seal the same way.

Deb, I have some interesting avant-garde pieces a friend of mine brought back from China in the early 2000s. They are each a pullover made from a single piece of fabric, and so fabulous I have held onto them for 5 years despite being unable to wear them where I currently live. If you are interested in seeing them (or, upon seeing them, trying them on) let me know, I will take pics and we'll take it from there.

This is so intriguing! I'm wondering if iron on interfacing or seam tape work at the armholes or if it would look weird, fail to stick, and simply peel off. This makes me want to play around with old sheets.

I guess you laid one on top of the other to make your circle?
