sleeveless dress ok for teacher-awards ceremony??

Hi there

I love this site!! I have a quick question. I am a middle school pe teacher (who rarely gets a chance to dress-up). Tomorrow is our awards ceremony and the principal has asked everyone, including the kids, to dress appropriately.

My question: Is is okay to wear a sleeveless dress? I have a couple of sheath/shift type dressess I am thinking to wear. Should I wear a cardigan over it? (even though it will definitely take away from the dress!)
Is is ever okay to go sleeveless? And do you think I should wear a dress or a skirt with a nice top? Thanks all.

I am relatively newbie around here, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I think a sleevedress would be fine for the ceremony. You may want to post a few pics of you modeling the dresses you are considering, so that others can have a better idea and offer their advice.

As a former teacher who still volunteers, I see no problem with a sleeveless dress as long as it isn't spaghetti strap or low cut or high above your knees. The occasion calls for a bit more dressy attire than usual. A ladylike sheath dress sounds perfect.

A sleeveless sheath is always perfect for warm weather , and as Joy said as long as it isn't low, or too short you should feel confident:)

I also think a sheath dress would be perfectly appropriate. If you need more justification, just look to our first lady, Michelle Obama. She is frequently photographed wearing sleeveless dresses. I think she may have even worn a sleeveless dress for her official photograph.

You could even add pearls if you want to increase the dressiness factor.

I´m a teacher, too, and i know how it feels to present oneself to an adolescent "audience" each day.
But for a dressy occasion, a sleeveless dress is just perfect in my opinion.
Since you can´t show cleavage or legs as a teacher, it´s absolutely okay to show your arms - it´s a school, not a monastery!

Thanks for the replies..it's always hard to be modest, yet fashionable around the students. I ended up wearing a cardigan because it was soooi cold.. But I definitely know for the next time

I think that it's perfectly fine to go sleeveless. I just graduated from high school, and many of my female teachers wore sleeveless tops/dresses (but not tank tops or anything with spaghetti straps). I think that it's fantastic when teachers express themselves with their clothing; students do notice and admire those who do so.
