Skirts, Dresses, Boots and Snow

For those ladies that live with snow, I am looking for some pointers. I would like to wear skirts and dresses more as I feel that they are more flattering on me. Since finding fleece lined tights and knee high boots with low heels, this has become possible for me.

However, I never know how to deal with the snow. If it snowed the night before or is going to snow during the day, I don’t wear a dress. I don’t want to traipse through snow in my knee high boots, and I don’t want to wear my winter boots and carry in knee highs (booties are tough enough!). The office temperature requires knee highs in the winter.

Are La Canadienne or Aquatalia really resistant enough to take snow and salt? Should I invest in a pair?

What do you fashionable ladies do?

I've bought some Ecco boots last fall that are seriously the most awesome boots ever! Waterproof and perfect in the snow (warm and dry feet!), enough grip and still leather and dressy enough to wear with skirts and dresses. The most expensive pair of shoes I ever owned, but really worth it.

I have no experience with La Canadienne or Aquatalia because these are not available here, but if you find a suitable pair, snatch them up!

La Canadienne are made right in Montreal and they get lots of snow, I have a pair that's about 5 years old, still going strong. Mind you, I wipe them off regularly to prevent salt damage, and use the usual spray, polish etc. The Aquitalias I had were not real winter boots, but they were waterproof and they wore well too. I don't think you can go wrong with either brand.

I have three pairs of La Canadiennes, and all my friends swear by them. We have wicked weather here, lots of snow, very cold long winters. They are a great investment when you have a climate like this. I've worn mine for a few seasons and they still look great. In fact I'm shocked at how good the suede ones still look.

I only wear my hard-core Sorel snow boots when it is actually snowing at the moment I'm outside. Here we have rules that snow has to be cleared off sidewalks and streets within a few hours of the end of the snowfall, so there is usually an OK path to walk in regular boots if it's not actively snowing. I just make sure to choose boots that are water/salt resistant in the foot part (I've sprayed all my pairs anyway), warm, and have good traction, like my patent Naots or my Docs.

When I have to wear the Sorels I usually either wear my red Dansko mary janes that I've left at work (they go with almost everything, surprisingly, since they are lower profile than most danskos and have a bit of platform) or I carry some oxfords with me. Both of those work with skirt + tights.

I stick with my Trotters and White Mountain boots when it is snowing, or until I know everything is shovelled or plowed...then I break out my new Born beauties Which means they get the least wear, unfortunately... you are a brave lady to wear dresses in our weather! I live right next door, in Minnesota

Southwesthern Ontario dweller here - so Winter is reasonably serious business. I spray my knee-high leather boots with weatherproofing spray and wear 'em out in the snow. That said, my commute goes something like garage -> parking garage -> city sidwalks, so there are no snowbanks or anything. I stamp off excess snow when I get inside and if necessary give my boots a quick wipe dry with a paper towel in the ladies room, and then I'm good to go for the day.

My commute is garage, company parking lot (usually not shoveled timely), building. It is really that walk through unshoveled snow and ice that has me.

How often do you spray your boots? Once a week? Once a month? Once a season?

Once or twice a season - whenever they need cleaning, basically. I clean/polish and then spray after they are dry.
