High waisted skirts- easy to alter? Added waist photos.

During our lockdown I found a second hand skirt online. It is a designer skirt (Trelise Cooper) in my size and it was a good price. It took nearly 5 weeks by courier because I think this courier company is having issues. The courier driver couldn't read the address but it was perfectly well labelled. It seems to fit me but I'm not used to high waist and firm fitting ones. After I put it on and wear it, it feels ok but I'm just wondering if I should see if I could take the waist down to a midwaist. I wouldn't wear it tucked in anyway. I might wear it for a while and see how I feel with it on. I can't return it but I could sell it or pass it on. Ignore the yoga bralette...probably not the best choice with a singlet.

Should be no problem with a gathered waistband.

Hard to see the material from here, but probably add a whole new waistband in a different but matching fabric. I would replace it with elastic, maybe add a drawstring too.

I like the shape and length! If the waist simply feels too high, I’d try wearing it a few times before deciding. But if it’s too tight then yeah, have it altered.

I’m having trouble returning a thing I ordered this summer. The original packaging was half destroyed, and the whole thing put in a different package to be sent to me months too late.

Thank you. I tried it on this morning and it fits nicely...maybe just don't eat...lol.

Approprio - It is a light soft satin I think. The thing is it is second hand and there is no indication of the material and even the size is not on it just the designers name. It has a zip on the side. The waistband is very thin. I do have clothes alterations place nearby...maybe I should ask them if I decide its uncomfortable.
Stagiaire fash - I'm not sure if its too tight or too high. I'm so used to wearing my skirts loosely on my waist. If it was jeans, I wouldn't think it was too tight, but then I tend to wear things with elasticine because I'm so fussy about comfort.....no high heels, no tight waists etc. I"m just not used to having anything firmly fitting on my waist.
suntiger - if it doesn't work out, you are first in line.
cat 2- I think if I keep it, I might wear with fitting top but can't imagine tucking into a high waist. Anyway never say never.

Here are pictures of the waistline. I put on a white shirt to highlight everything. It might just be me not used to wearing things so high and firm as it’s not pulling and every time I put it back on it feels easier to wear. I’m so short waisted that I don’t feel comfortable tucking it in.

Really pretty skirt and it looks like it fits well. I hate tight waist anything so I know how you feel. If you decide it's a little too snug you could see what the alteration people say. The zipper could make it a little bit trickier than if there wasn't one but a pro should be able to do it pretty easily.

I think it looks really lovely Sally. I have a Trelise Cooper Skirt with a high fitted waist and I just wear it. It keeps me in check too as a gauge on my waist size!!

I hope you enjoy it because it looks wonderful. Just take it off for lounging at home:)

Please don't alter! It's beautiful, looks perfect and appears to be a great fit. Unless it actually is too tight, I think you'll come to enjoy wearing it.

Wow, as someone who always struggles with her waist (what fits over my hips is too baggy in the waist, & vice versa) I envy how well that skirt fits yours! Echoing the others here, please don't alter the skirt - it looks like it was made for you!

(PS - You could also just unzip it slightly so that it sits further down when lounging around at home. Or I suppose you could just wear it like that outside, with a longer top).

Thank you everyone. I wore it to work and I started to feel really comfortable in it.
RobinF - thanks yeah i have a thing about tight waists but I might get used to this. I would have been useless with corsets!
Sal- That is a great idea ....wear it regularly to keep a tab on waist size. I did get used to it during the day today as I wore it to work and forgot that it was fitted. I always take my work clothes or going out clothes off anyway at home especially in this hot weather...its t-shirts and shorts at home.

Zaeobi - you made me laugh...the comment about wearing it unzipped reminded me of the half tuck and the skirts with swagger. It could be a new way of showing a bit of RATE ...wearing your skirt unzipped
Actually I taught in a girls school early 2000s and there was a fad about unzipping your skirt as they thought it looked sexy and I remember going around on a field trip telling girls to zip their skirts up.

Yay! Glad it felt good, after getting used to it. On using it to gauge fitness—I rarely use scale or tape measure anymore; the mirror and my son give me actionable feedback. Clothes can do the same.

Haha why not, I suppose it's like an intentionally exposed zip as a RATE look too. I can see how a half unzipped skirt might seem sexy to them, but if I did that then it would just look like I forgot to zip my skirt back up again after going to the loo

Anyway I'm glad it's starting to feel comfortable, even whilst fully zipped

This is nice on you ! Glad to see that you’ve received the advice you were looking for here. This is exactly the same issue I have with skirts , which is why I never wear them . I actually prefer a stretch waist of some sort so I can either roll it down or wear it lower than intended . Skirts always end up sitting right underneath my chest which is NOT
a good look .

Very funny about the unzipped waist. If undone shoe laces and ripped jeans and shorts with pockets hanging out can be fashionable then why not!!

Stagiaire Fash - If I had used the skirt gauge idea long ago, I would probably not have allowed myself to put on weight so easily. Its the elastic waist that lets me expand that has got me into trouble.

LIsa p - yes that is why I didn't have any skirts and I find the proportions and tucking parts hard, but I'm playing around with it...smoke and mirrors stuff.
Zaeobi and Sal - unzipped skirts is probably too RATE ... I'm going to leave it to the teenagers.

So this conversation led me to get out my “measuring” pants. I was surprised they zipped up with no problem, but the pleats say I’m not ready to wear them, even with smoke & mirrors. I wonder how many other people have that one garment they use as a gauge.

What a great skirt, Sally! I'm glad you are adjusting to the fit and enjoying wearing it.

You make such a good point about our friend 'elastic' making it easy for weight to creep up unnoticed. I use the fit of certain clothes to track body changes when my weight is going down, so not sure why it hasn't occurred to me to do the same to help me maintain my weight.

I think this fits you so beautifully, it looks like it was made for you! You look wonderful with it tucked in, so don’t rule that out as a styling option!

I’m glad it was a “getting used to” thing, as opposed to being uncomfortable!

I think this skirt could work across a variety of seasons and occasions - it would be fun to see some stylings with dress boots or stomps boots. Or any type of boot, really. Style lab?
