Skinny Jeans: Over or Not?

Hi everyone, I'm in the position of needing to buy a new pair of basic/wardrobe staple dark jeans. I had a great pair of skinnies that are too big now, but I'm thinking skinny jeans are on their way out. You can still get away with them here in LA, but I'd like to be a little more current.

Do you think they're in or out? And if you were to buy a basic, what shape would you get? I will already probably be buying a boot cut, and would like a different shape.

I don't think they are out, at least I hope not. I am thinking it looks like they are going to be around forever. There are a lot of variations of them. It is looking like, to me, the really leg hugging ones that look like tights are going out. however, there are so many that are not as wide as the older ones labeled boot cut, are out too. The best looks, IMO, now are leg looks that are straight tapered . Seems what I am seeing most are either the narrow tapered, but not skin tight, and the wider ones. But, again IMO, wide legs are harder to wear, do not fit or look good on more people. They are not going to replace the others.

IMHO skinnies will never completely disappear because they tuck into tall boots. Low rise skinnies and other styles seem to be disappearing in favor of mid and high rise. I find that certain cuts look better with certain styles of footwear and tops more than others if you pay attention to conventional flattery. Buy what makes you happy. And if low rises work best for your body, consider buying more than you might otherwise. Low rises don’t work at all for mine so I went for years and years and YEARS without buying jeans or most other pants. Believe me, you don’t want to experience that drought!

I consider a skinny leg - NOT the tight "jegging though" - a true classic. Just like bootcuts, straights, flares and crops. They all rotate through popularity at any given time, but if you look back through the history of denim, they've pretty much all been represented .

Agreeing with Lisap about the "classic" designation and with DonnaF about tucking into boots.
Even tucking into shorter snow boots is easier and neater and the blousy wider leg over boots is not an easy look to sport for shorter people.

Yeah- I am still on team skinny Jean although I have a great trouser pair that I get compliments on.

I also find them classic, though as others have said, some aspects like rise and the snugness of the leg will change somewhat.

I work at a fairly affluent university, and I still see the students mainly wearing skinny jeans. It's winter here in Australia now, and I think about 8/10 are wearing skinnies, generally with a high waist. So while they may not be the most "fashion forward" item, I certainly don't think they are looking dated.

We obviously don't have issues with snow here - or even much rain where I am - so it's not just climate. I think skinny jeans are easier to wear with flat shoes and sneakers, too.

If you’re looking for something other than a skinny jean, I really like the skinny that is a little wider at the calf. I think these might be called “straight leg” or “cigarette” or “pipe”.

I also like flared jeans.

I prefer a slim straight, but I think everyone has a "slender silhouette" jean, and a flare silhouette that suits their frame and style.

I'm a fan of boyfriend (Gap calls it "girlfriend".) A bit slouchy/easy around the hips and thighs, narrowing down the leg, but not skinny-tight. For a change, either wide legs or classic 501-style with turnup cuffs.

Here I still see so, so many young people wearing skin tight skinnies- so I’m thinking they’re still in. Kmart, Target, Zara and just jeans are stocking a plethora of them too.... so I think you’re safe. I’m also seeing mom jeans a lot. Not as many wide legs or even cropped wide legs here. Slim straights like what I prefer are probably not on trend at the moment- but I still prefer them on my figure and I don’t think they’re exactly out of fashion either iykwim.

In my neck of the woods, everyone is still wearing skinny jeans. I think that they will always be in fashion. The silhouette is so simple that it goes with a lot of different types of tops and footwear, and it looks good on pretty much everybody...so it will have a lot of longevity.

I agree - modern classic. Plenty of them being worn here - along with boyfriend, "Mom" jeans, various cropped styles, a few dungarees. Flares and bootlegs are the least common at the moment.

I think they are classic too, with relaxed or straighter leg versions with higher rises being the most current.

Even here where temps and humidity are relentlessly high, I’m still seeing women in skinnies as much as any other denim silhouette, if not more. I’m glad that anything goes, denim-wise, these days!

Coming back to say that the HIGH RISE skinny jean worn with a tucked top is very TRENDY.

Agree that the practicality of skinny jeans (with boots) in cold/wet seasons means they will never truly go away, though the specifics may trend in different ways (rise, degree of skinniness, distressing, etc.). At least, I hope that's the case! I am having trouble remembering how I got dressed in the winter before skinnies and tall boots...

I do wonder at them being a classic though. 15 years ago they weren't to be seen (outside a limited subculture) in Australia. Why are you all so sure that will never happen again?

I think skinnies have become an acceptable staple jean. I also think that some of the details will change from time to time. Right now, high waisted seems to be the "it" thing, and I've read a piece on WhoWhatWear about skinny straight vented jeans (pic) that make me happy u still have these faux suede pants with zips at the ankles (find) (mine are significantly longer on me than they look on the model)

I still see mostly skinny jeans, at least on younger women. They're practical for winter, though I like seeing other options too. Modern classic for sure.

Where I live (Scandinavia), skinnies seem to be very popular among teenagers. But I see few people over 40 in skinnies.

I have never been a fan of skinnies and have always preferred (slim or wider) straight legs or bootcut

I'll be in mourning if skinnies truly go out of style.

My hips, thighs and booty are fairly narrow, so I tend to feel I look best in close fitting bottoms and a looser top.
(of course I may be wrong )

I'm wanting high-waisted straights that are just above my ankle bone, but am having trouble finding them without heavy distressing. And I want true straights, without a bit of taper. Some of the jeans they are calling straight actually taper when you lay the leg out flat.
