Skin health doesn't end at your neck

Earlier this week, Mr. ND received a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma. A lesion just under his collarbone had changed appearance and started to bleed slightly. Mr. ND will be scheduled for an additional procedure to ensure the carcinoma hasn't spread. BCC is quite common and generally slow growing. If you are not already, please start wearing sunscreen. This includes people with darker skin tones because melanin does not protect from ultraviolet rays. UVA and UVB rays are present on cloudy days. Finally, consider getting a total body skin check from a dermatologist once a year. I can guarantee Mr ND will be doing so from now on.

Oh, I very much hope that Mr. ND's carcinoma has not spread! I'm glad he has the slow growing variety and hope his additional checks come back looking good.

And thank you for the reminder. I have been wearing sunscreen for the past many years, but only recently have I started doing as Angie does and covering up in the summertime. When I go for my walks, I wear long-sleeved sun protection tops with higher collars. Still, I was exposed the the sun and had a number of nasty burns as a child, which doesn't help.

I will be scheduling a full body check and encouraging Dh to do so as well.

I do love being out of doors and beach vacations, but make a habit of slathering on SPF 60 all the time, and have done so since my late 20’s. Because of the amount of time I do spend out of doors for sports and gardening (regardless of sunscreen) I get a skin check from a dermatologist on the regular.

FWIW, though the head/face is a common place to note potential problems, an extremely common place that is often missed is the back of calves.

DH and I have become hardcore hat wearers year ‘round! DH has so many senior men golfing buddies getting spots scraped off their faces and bald heads!

Suz: I fully believe Mr. ND will be fine after he completes the next step in treatment. I think he's been a bit hard on himself because he didn't go to his physician sooner.
Angie: Thank you! I stay covered in the summer too.
Echo: I'm with you on sun protection garments. Since Mr. ND has a birthday next month, I'm going get him a couple of sun protection shirts. I wish I knew what I know now about sunscreen in my youth. I wear it every single day without fail.
Runcarla: Mr. ND and I both wear Sunday Mornings hats and polarized sunglasses when we're outdoors. I may order the sun protection sleeves Mr. ND wears when he plays tennis and golf.

Yup - good reminder to all . I get a full body check every time I’m at a dermatologist or a doctor for my annual physical . It’s a scary , scary form of cancer - well , they all are .

sooooo glad you guys caught it ! my mom has had all three : basal cell , squamous and melanoma. All caught early also.

As you point out , they can pop up anywhere ! Even the scalp. It's always a good idea to ask your hairdresser or barber to mention anything they might see that's unusual too.

I’m so glad you caught it early. I had one of those years ago, had it removed, and got religious about sunblock plus regular screenings from then on. No further problems, I’m glad to say. I hope Mr. ND has a successful outcome and no further problems!

ND, I get a full body check annually as my father had many skin cancers burned off after a childhood spent in our summer sun. Thank you for this timely reminder.

This formidable woman happens to be Mr. A's cousin so at least one of us follows her advice at all times.

Besides making friends with your dermatologist, check out the high SPF clothing at Coolibar.

I am often found in summer in full shade, under a high-SPF hat, behind big sunglasses, and wearing long sleeved, high-necked, long-legged Coolibar clothing. Also fingerless gloves.

Hope Mr ND is given a clean bill of health soon!

I also apply face & body suncream daily, year round. Do you know the Australian brand Solbari for SPF clothing too? Seems they're similar to Coolibar - I've mixed & matched a swimsuit from their SPF swim clothes too.

I do need to get better about hat wearing though, since I find them to be a hassle on public transport (always worried I'm going to accidentally hit someone with the brim, lol!)

We should wear sunscreen regularly as it prevents skin cancer and other harmful skin damages. Sunscreen is selected according to skin type and patch test is necessary before applying a new one in order to check allergies. To know more, visit allergic to mineral sunscreen

So, it's chilly and pouring here this weekend but I am excited to try out, when we dry out, my new 100 SPF lightweight summer pants from Solumbra.

Found their name on a brochure at the derm's office. Just got them hemmed. Come on, weather!
