In my recent OOTD post, I mentioned that I’d do a separate post with resources for some of the smaller size-inclusive “slow fashion” brands that also focus on ethical, sustainable production in various ways. Here are brands that I have personal experience with.

Keep in mind that these are small, slow fashion brands with ethical sourcing that pay a living wage, many of which are produced in the US, Canada, or Europe. In addition, many of them are producing clothes made to order, using sustainably sourced and high quality fabrics. Accordingly, costs and prices are going to be higher than mass produced fast fashion. And expect longer turnaround after ordering if it isn’t a ready-to-wear purchase, of course! (The quality is worth it.)

Also, return policies for made to order or customizations will vary with each brand - I haven’t listed those here but linked to their websites where you can read more about their policies and practices.

Please feel welcome to let me know if you have questions about my personal experience. This is wholly my opinion and initiated by me; these brands and their creators don’t know I’m sharing this info, nor am I an influencer who receives kickbacks/perks/gifts for mentioning them.

I will add to that the owners of these businesses all seem like terrific people - I’ve reached out to many of them with questions before ordering, customization requests, etc. and received prompt and helpful responses.

I’m intentionally limiting this list to brands that I’ve tried myself, and those who include sizing beyond what typical fast-fashion retailers generally offer to plus sized or fat customers. (There are already lots of slow-fashion brands who only cater to smaller customers.)

Connally McDougall - Vancouver, B.C. (Canada)
https://connallygoods.com
Connally designs sustainable fashion for every body, including many gender-neutral items in sustainably sourced fabrics. Includes clothing and accessories such as scarves or shoes. Small batch production, many of which are pre-orders when new styles or fabrics are released.
Check out their one of a kind hand-dyed pieces! I love their tencel twill and raw denim fabrics.
Custom sizing offered at no additional cost.
Core sizing: XS-7X but they offer custom sizing up to “infinity”, any size.

Shift & Wheeler - Astoria, OR (USA)
https://shiftwheeler.com
Shift & Wheeler unite two brands - Shift focuses on clothing (their signature is the suspender shift dress, but they also have many other cool pieces in natural fibers with a focus on gender-neutral clothing) whereas Wheeler Bag Co. makes beautiful, durable waxed canvas bags and recently started making leather belts as well. They have a retail store in Astoria and also stock goods by other sustainably sourced brands and small businesses.
Custom sizing is offered. (Whenever possible - i.e. if they still have a desired fabric in stock - if it doesn’t fit, they will make one that does.)
Sizing: Their own size range of 1-10, 35-74” bust size.

Copper Union Apparel - Portland, OR (USA)
https://copperunionapparel.com
Beautiful clothing for radical fat bodies. Claire of Copper Union is dedicated to designing and producing quality plus size separates. In particular, I’m impressed by the beautiful high qualify fabrics. I have one of their crop tops in a shimmery fabric that looks like a metal ribbon but is surprisingly soft, and a couple printed mesh tops. Check out their Collaborations page - there was a wonderful collab with Ijeoma Oluo this summer.
Custom sizing is offered.
Sizing: 12–38

Tuesday of California
https://tuesdayofcalifornia.com
(Formerly branded as Tuesday Bassen, the brand’s creator/owner.)
Small batch, sweatshop-free clothing production. Retro silhouettes with edgy details. Many of their items are released with discounted pre-orders. Their fabrics are beautiful and feel very high quality. Special call-outs include their classic Diner Dress. I’m also fond of their Sister Skirt and Agnes mesh mock-neck top.
Don’t miss their pre-loved site, either - a good way to watch for discounted or discontinued items.
Sizing: 2-32

Street & Saddle - Vancouver, B.C. (Canada)
https://www.streetandsaddle.com
Street & Saddle started out primarily as equestrian wear, which they still offer, but they also include other clothing with a “horse girl” twist.
Much of their pieces are made-to-order. I’m especially fond of their bamboo/rayon knitwear (lovely ribbed turtleneck and v-necks) and snap-front blouses.
Watch Instagram for their Friday Favorites where they do made-to-order small batch collections that are not sold on their website.
Custom sizing is offered.
Sizing: XXS-5X

Sotela - Los Angeles, CA (USA)
https://sotela.co
Customized for your body. Everything is made to order. Clothing includes dresses, tops, bottoms, jumpsuits.
“We created Sotela because we saw the need for a fashion line that was designed for humans, all humans. As we’ve grown, we’ve listened carefully to the humans who buy our clothes or wants to buy our clothes, ensuring that with each new collection we are deepening our commitment to inclusivity for all body types and genders. We design each collection with real bodies in mind, not models or mannequins.”
I particularly love their wrap skirt. I haven’t tried their just-released Jardin Spring 2023 collection but the fabrics look AMAZING - some have already sold out!
Custom sizing offered.
Sizing: their own sizing chart, 0-10, approximately a US dress size 0-30, but with a fully made-to-order model they can offer up to any size.

Pamut Apparel - North Carolina (USA)
https://pamutapparel.com
Inclusive clothing - redefining sustainable fashion.
“Every Pamut piece is made by hand in North Carolina, either by our team in our Raleigh studio or by Opportunity Threads in the foothills of NC.”
Pamut truly does an amazing job with customizations. In fact, a couple times they have suggested customizations to me (such as a slight change in length or adding side slits) that made a fit perfect! Particularly known for interesting geometric color-blocking and beautiful natural fibers fabrics. Check out their current collaboration of hand-marbled silk!

Custom sizing offered at any size.

Sizing: their core sizes are XS - 4XL but custom length and widths are offered at no additional cost.

House of Flint - UK
https://www.houseofflint.co.uk
Honest, slow fashion designed for all bodies. In particular, they offer clothing that can be adjusted/flexible when your body is changing sizes or fluctuates in size or shape, including converting to maternity wear. Gorgeous fabrics and quirky features.
House of Flint is primarily made-to-order, and currently their made-to-order shop is closed while they catch up on previous orders - they aim to re-open order requests towards late spring.
They also offer a small amount of ready-made items, and have a Preloved section where customers offer up their gently worn pieces for sale.
Custom sizing offered at any size.
Sizing: their core sizes are XS-5XL

Peridot Robes - Los Angeles, CA (USA)
https://peridotrobes.com
Luxurious robes as well as other knit and lounge clothing for fat bodies. (Seriously, the robes are AMAZING. Generously sized - don’t size up!)
“We use fabric remnants for all of our robes... We also make all of our robes in Los Angeles in fair-wage sewing rooms. We support small businesses everywhere we can from our labels to our designers, we always prioritize community and impact over profits.”
On a limited as-available basis, they also offer robes (either at a discount or at no cost) to their most marginalized customers.
Sizing: their own size range 1-7, equivalent of US dress sizes 14-40

Oge Ajibe - Vancouver, B.C. (Canada)
https://ogeajibe.com
“The best way to characterise Oge Ajibe is as a company that educates consumers on how to portray themselves in all facets of fashion. Our inclusive, sustainable apparel, which is all hand-made in Canada, gives our customers a special sense of comfort and confidence.”
Fun, colorful, and comfortable clothing. Their wrap tops are especially beautiful, and while I don’t think they have prints in stock right now, those they have had in the past have been fantastic.
Sizing: XS - 5XL

What Lo Wants - Los Angeles, CA (USA)
https://whatlowants.com
High quality, ethically made pieces that celebrate plus-sized bodies.
“At What Lo Wants, we take time (4-6 fit testing sessions!) crafting thoughtful garments that feel and look luxurious. Our pieces are designed and created in Los Angeles alongside our awesome sewing team - whom we visit often with coffee.”
Check out their newly released mesh Sicily print - you’ve seen me wear the top!

A community and ethics based clothing brand. “Free Label was founded in 2015 by Jess Sternberg in an effort to create beautiful, comfortable and sustainably focused clothing in a system where everyone gets paid fairly. We manufacture sizes 5X-XS all in small batches.“
Knit clothing, loungewear, soft bras, and swimwear. Their lounge pants are EXCELLENT!
Sizing: XS - 5X
