I recently realized that I desperately need to make a hairstyle change. My hair has not really changed for several years. Even with minor variations, it's always just past shoulder length, layered, with bangs. Pictures 1-3 were taken after a cut in the fall. It hasn't changed much since then, it's just a bit longer. I am so bored with it!

I have had shorter hair in the past, even very short (pixie-ish). I am not afraid to cut it, or to make a change, but I am afraid of looking old and/or frumpy. I feel out of touch with what's modern and age appropriate (I am 43). I want a flattering, modern and feminine cut but with a bit of sass that is not too "done" looking. I want to keep some form of bang, and I also want to make sure that the hair is directed back/away from my face as I find it much more flattering (even being able to tuck it behind my ear is enough to satisfy this).

Pictures 4-6 appeal to me, but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed and unsure of myself. Thoughts?

I am useless with giving hair advice but I took picture #5 to my hairstylist because I loved it so much. Not what I ended up with but it is a really cute haircut.

You have very pretty eyes. Whatever you do I would suggest putting the emphasis on your eyes. Maybe that is why you like bangs and your hair off your face.

I think cutting a few inches off and angling it up towards the back, like in pics 4 and 6, would be nice on you. And a bit more current. You can still keep the bangs.

I think aiming for 4/6 might look great on you -- you have great cheekbones and a jaw line, so having some pieces that curve forward/frame those points on one side would look great (as in number 4). I would maybe try having your bangs swept to the side and and blended into the sides (as in 4 or 5) as that looks more contemporary to my eye than a 'shelf' of bangs (unless they are really dramatic and sculpted straight down). The longer the bangs, the easier to get a swept back look on the sides imo -- although keeping a few piecey bits at the front can still give you forehead framing/coverage.

Style Fan, that's funny that we chose the same inspiration photo! And I think you're right about the connection between my bangs and my eyes - thanks, I never thought of that before.

Aquamarine, I think you're right about a shorter length and different angle being more current - thanks for that.

Rabbit, that's a great suggestion for more contemporary bangs - thank you. Mine grow very fast, so side swept and longer should be an easy transition for me.
