Simple a line skirt - should I make one?

For many years a simple unlined A-line skirt in a patterned fabric was a staple in my summer casual wardrobe. I was thinking of making one (I have made two in the past from a pattern my Mum bought in the 60's or 70's and she is bringing her sewing machine with her tomorrow for a one week stay - I could ask her to bring the pattern)

I haven't seen anything like this on Ezibuy and haven't actually looked at any shops this (Australian) summer.

Is this an unfashionable look right now or should I just go for it?

BTW I have set myself a VERY strict budget for the 10/11 year which gives me about $150 total to spend on summer clothes

Yes, sew a skirt like that! I've always worn skirts like that in the summer too.

I think a basic a-line skirt is always in fashion, and practically an essential in an Aussie summer! I reckon sewing your own would be a better use of your time and money than hunting down a skirt in the shops too. At the moment, a lot of them are only carrying high-waisted pencil/tulip styles or little flouncy minis.

Yes--and why not cut and make two or three off the same pattern, assembly-line style, while you're at it? These are great basics, especially for summer, and super easy to sew. You can always vary the length or try some applied trims or fancy buttons for variety's sake. Have fun!

I like A-line skirts and - you are a pear, right? - it should be very flattering ob you. I say go for it - and make one for winter as well while you on it!

Stringy - that is exactly the insight I needed (ie what the shops have ) Actually I lonve the sound of highwaisted pencil skirts but it isn't what I need as an SAHM in summer!

Velma - that is a great idea. I have already asked Mum to bring down not only the pattern but any fabric offcuts she may have which may faciliate making a few

I do lean towards being a pear. I think I might be a bit like you actually - straight shouldered and small in the bust and my "peariness" not in my hips but in my bottom and thighs.
A-line skirts are indeed easier to wear with this figure.

Re your suggestion to make a winter one too - I bought some brown pleather years ago planning to make an A -line skirt with it and never did, and have been contemplating whether this is the time to do it!

Yes, yessy, yes, you should make some!

I think the biggest thing about it is the choice of fabric you use. Go have a look online for A-line skirts and see what fabrics and patterns look nice. I guess solid would be a lot easier to start with than an intricate pattern, although if your mum is a good seamstress, I'm sure she'd be able to help you get it so that the pattern matches.

The extra advantage of this as well, is that you can then hem it so that it finishes at *exactly* the right point.

In fact, if you try it and you love it, I may even be game enough to try and sew a few for myself! (I'm also frustrated in not being able to find suitable skirts and am watching my pennies as well.)
