Silver Skirt, help!

I found this crazy skirt on sale at Bloomingdale's the other day, and I don't know why but I bought it! This thing is way out of my comfort zone and I'm thinking that everyone will laugh at me if I show up somewhere wearing a silver lamé skirt. I've hung it up on display in my closet and every time I walk by it I smile. But I'm not sure if I know how to pull it off and accesorize it.

Does this black lace top go ok with? Also, being size 16 I've NEVER tucked in a shirt so I'm very self conscious about it, do I look ok? Do I have to stick with black or white and if not how do I add a pop of color, or is this skirt pop enough?

Sorry for the rambling, I'm just really excited about this skirt and also petrified to wear it.

Totally get why you bought it! I love it. I am wondering if you might consider a cropped welter top with this. I think it would create a nice line and look very good:)

I can see what you mean about the cropped top. What worries me is that I'm very big busted and volume on top of volume can be very overwhelming on me because my shoulders are very narrow.

Good point! I wonder if it's worth trying. I was looking for some photo examples but couldn't find any. I think one of our veteran members Kari may have worn this look. She is beautiful and curvaceous, her WIW's might inspire?? I will have a look now.

Not sure if halter tops would be your thing, with narrow shoulders, but that would certainly speak to the Marilyn Monroe skirt :-), and you have the bust for it.
You could put a tiny cropped cardi with it. I can see this with pink or aqua as well as black and white. And definitely polka dots or a sweet checkered or gingham look.
And this is screaming for a statement costume jewelry. A bracelet, perhaps?

To me, much of the styling will depend on how you answer the question, 'Where are you going when you're wearing this?" Are you going about your daily routine? Are you at work? Are you going to a party? Are you going out on the weekend?

When you imagine yourself out and about wearing this skirt, where are you?

I could see, for example, adding a white tank and a cropped jean jacket and sandals and wearing it out to brunch, but I can't see me doing that in my neck of the woods, where "brunch" doesn't exist and "going out for breakfast on a Saturday" means a clean t-shirt over your shorts or capris.

I think the skirt is lovely, and you could wear it all over the place!

How about an asymmetrical top of some sort. Also possibly a jean jacket and a belt would make a nice accent to this skirt.

I imagine wearing this for a date night, possibly a christening, a low-key wedding, definitely not brunch (not that someone couldn't, but just not me), and not something super fancy. In between. I'd wear a heel with it. I also perform and I could wear this on stage.

A jacket might be nice, but since we're headed to the depths of summer I tend to not wear jackets or even sleeves when it's so hot.

So does this pairing not work?

Get over feeling self-conscious about the skirt...I think there are many style advantages to an out there skirt...I would simplfy the top pieces...and let the skirt be the star...
I would wear that skirt wherever..I don't know your profession but if wearing it to work might be a stretch..then wear it shopping, or out to eat or to the grocery store...
Believe me, there are people who will be agast and it has nothing to do with your skirt..They are the ones who just don't bother...You are the one who found and styled a magnet...smile..

Maybe a streamlined peplum top? Or peplum jacket?
It's very pretty and I'm thinking that after you've one it once or twice you'll be loving it even more.

Here are some outfits with my silver skirt if you want some outfit ideas. I am a pear shape (sounds like you might be too?). I think the silver goes with all colors actually - think of it as just a shiny grey.

My skirt is more casual (it's coated linen) but it looks like yours could work for dressy/semi formal occasions too.

Your styling does work although it's a little bit pear-emphasizing (as a fellow pear I am probably a little super sensitive about this though). A lighter color top, or one with a little more volume (doesn't have to be boxy or even voluminous volume, even something as simple as wider, more structured shoulders) would be more "balancing". Keep some waist definition if you are worried about too much volume. The peplum top someone suggested about would be a good idea.

I'm loving how you've styled your silver skirt Diana! I'm going to keep playing with it and try out different shaped tops. I can see it goes well with other colors too.

You're so right crutcher, there will always be people out there that are negative no matter what so I'll stick to feeling good about my new favorite buy.

Off to experiment!

I thought abou a cropped top too, but also like the idea of a halter. Love Diana's examples. This lace top is fine as well. I think you have to make sure the back tuck is neat, and I'd add a big necklace for balance - the skirt is *wow* and so I say *wow* up top too.

Peplum, yes I'll try finding one of those!

So unlike a safe pair of pants I'm just worried that if this goes wrong it would be a cringe worthy failure. It's so hard to step out of the safety zone. I'll try some things by tomorrow and post some more pics.

I have some of those smile-as-you-catch-sight-of-them purchases, too, and you know, I tend not to regret them! That's a very cool skirt, and once you've worn it a couple of times, you'll be more comfortable with it. Diana has given some perfect examples, and illustrates one thing I would suggest: rather than black, consider going for something closer in tone to the skirt. Because it's metallic, you can choose either the lowlight (shadow) tone, as Diana did with her teal top, or the highlight (reflection) as she did with the white one. This will give the outfit a more cohesive, less chopped-in-half look. Try some grays or blues in different tones, plus white, and you may see a difference. A slightly cropped top with a banded hem, and a boat neck and/or strong shoulder is worth trying, too. If you can find such a thing, I think a mariner-striped top in white and metallic gray would look sensational!

I see a sequin black tank with a tuxedo type black jacket (see find) over the top dunno why just what I think would look nice for a night out or party outfit.
