Silk Wrap skirt - YouLookFab Forum

I was given this skirt as a gift a few years ago and I can not figure out how to style it. It’s a super-versatile wrap style and the fabric is freaking beautiful.

I really think these are at their best with a choli top or a bit of exposed skin at the belly. I’d be okay with that at the beach, and can see using this as a cover up for something like that, but I live in a landlocked state, and beach getaways aren’t really a big part of my life. I need a bit more coverage for the local grocery store or Shakespeare in the Park. Can anyone suggest tops to wear with this for my real life?

Hmm I think a sleeveless tee in a solid colour with some big hoop earrings and boho sandals. Nice skirt.

Love a wrap skirt! How about a graphic tee with some of the color of the skirt in the graphic? Would a peasant style blouse work? I love that style on you. Wear the skirt under or over your boho silky dresses?

Joy, I tried it on over one of my silk tunic dresses yesterday and it did work. VERY maximal, but if I could get over the psychological discomfort, it made for an interesting outfit.

Jussie, I can’t wear earrings, but I think the right tee could work—either a plain one as you suggest or a graphic one as Joy does. I don’t have anything that feels right in my closet, though, so maybe I should take the skirt out on a shopping trip.

Actually, I think the -right- graphic tee could work for me, paired with sandals or Chucks. Finding the right one, though...

I think a fitted or semi fitted tank top.

Also a sleeveless faux wrap top could work. Sort of turns it into a wrap dress.

Gorgeous skirt, Jenn. How does it look with your wrap top from Velvet? Or rather than trying to match the colours in the skirt with the top what would the skirt look like with a black T? Then you could wear black accessories with it.
I had a similar skirt made out of sari silk. I don't know what happened to it. I wore it with a tank top and jean jacket. I also wore it with a jean shirt knotted at my waist.

Style Fan, good memory! I did try it with the Velvet wrap top (matches your suggestion too, Brooklyn) and it was probably the best of what I tried, especially if I wore black shoes. I wish there was -any- black in the print, though, because without it, all my black tops looked terribly heavy.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I might take this shopping with me and do an outfit lab in the dressing room.

I would probably pair this with an olive, taupe or white top and wear cognac leather sandals and accessories with this skirt. Do you have these colours in your closet to play with it?

It is interesting, because I think this skirt "should" work for your - but statement skirts can be hard if you don't get the right top to work with them.

Yes, I agree with others about wearing something like a tank top on top.

Bijou, I have olive and cognac and "my white" which ranges from a very natural off-white to cream.

I also have several fitted tanks (these) in black, olive, and taupe, but I don't usually wear them without something over the top. To be totally honest, I mostly wear them as lounge/sleepwear.

It sounds like I should look for a semi-fitted tank or close-fitting graphic tee. I tried it with the graphic tees I have, and I liked the silhouette, but the colors didn't work right. I have an off-white silk tank on my wishlist for this season... it would be ideal if the one I found could also rescue this skirt, but I'm not above getting something just for this, as I understand skirts are tricky.

Aww, thanks Angie. I actually kind of like it, too, but it would only work for real life if I popped a cami under the sheer kimono on top. You can't tell in the photo, but my bra shows right through. Even with the cami, it's definitely out of my comfort zone! Feels like a costume...closer to my old belly dance persona than my everyday one.

But an off-white silk camisole or something like that would be incredibly useful as a layering piece for all sorts of outfits.

It is a great skirt/dress Jenn. I think denim works well with it. I miss my skirt so much. I like the idea of pairing it with ivory or off-white so the colours from the skirt stand out.

The fabrics really are beautiful, and I love a wrap skirt (haven’t owned a true one in years though!). My approach with things like this, which are such a statement on their own, is to default to a simple tee or tank in a neutral to let the skirt be the star. But what you’ve done here is really fun, and I’m intrigued with the suggestions to layer it over a tank dress!

It seems so simple in theory, but none of the tops in my wardrobe look right, either tucked or untucked. This waistline and color scheme just doesn't seem to play well with anything I own.

I can see why it is hard to style. But it is lovely.. A woven tee or tank in crea m or olive would be good. I am sure you have footwear - tan or cognac sandals.

Or book a trip to A beach resort:)
