showdown --jack purcell vs stan smith

i'm trying to decide if i should replace my 3 year old cons. the cons are starting to show some wear, and if been debating if i should try to replace them with another pair, keep the pair i have now, or go with the stan smiths. i'm interested what you wonder fabbers think.

Thanks for this post, kkards! I've been having the exact same debate -- though in my case either purchase would be new. I never thought to do a side-by-side comparison like you show though -- so you've helped me decide I like the Purcells better in white or off white. I think the longer line and tapering will be better for my shorter legs. I did see a pair of Stan Smiths somewhere in grey that I really liked though...

In your case, I think you could wear either of these. The Stan Smiths are probably a look that's becoming more current for those who can carry it off. I don't think your existing pair are showing too much wear, BTW. They look nicely worn in to me.

Stan Smith FTW! Ok, full disclosure , I have a pair too. I just think they look slightly more polished and clean look than canvas runners.

Lol, my brother had a pair of Stan Smiths 25 years ago that looked exactly like that. I remember, because at the time we had the same foot size, and I kept nicking them to wear to school.

Anyway, my vote is for whichever is more comfortable. They give exactly the same vibe. Another option would be Chuck Taylors, which are even more classic.

To the point Lisa makes abut the Stan Smiths looking more polished than canvas sneakers: do you want polish in a sneaker? I personally don't. For me, the whole point of sneaker is that they look a little worn, like you actually do stuff in them. Whenever I get new Converse, I try to scuff them up a bit ASAP. (Angie would not approve!). If you want your sneakers to look pristine, though, then the Stan Smiths, being leather, will definitely stay clean for longer.

aziraphale, yeah, i tried the chuck's and they just don't work for me….and yup, back in the 70s (way for than 25 years ago), i had a pair of stan's just like these….

Love the Stan Smiths. I have a pair of leather Pumas that I wear all of the time. What I like about the leather sneaks is that they look a little more polished than my Cons. I think because my clothes are so RATE, the leather sneaks prevent me from looking slovenly. I'm not sure you are in the same boat but that's my 2 cents. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Oh, go with the Stan's for old time's sake alone, then. You'll get a kick every time you wear them. Always a good feeling.

I think these shoes both do the same job but the leather ones are more polished.
