We're redoing a bathroom. We redid the other one a year ago. Last year I had a vision, and everything came together easily. My favorite part is the floor.

Anyway, this year, I don't have a vision. Have you redone a bathroom? Did it turn out well? Please share pictures and/or advice.

I did both my bathrooms and am super happy with both of them! I have that hex marble tile in the shower in my master bath and just love it!

I've been perusing Houzz; I'm on page 115 of small bathrooms. I'm attracted to a modern, spare aesthetic. I love love love the hexagon, but don't want another grey cabinet. At the cabinet shop the white cabinets didn't look as great as I had imagined. Maybe I should go natural wood? My other factor is my husband. Just because I like something doesn't mean he will like it. His taste is a little more conventional than mine.

Wowza Mary, those are gorgeous! I'm going to be following this. I want to redecorate my downstairs "guest" bathroom...no bath, just whatever you call that. Powder room? Nothing like a remodel, no new fixtures, just paint and details somehow. I'll be seeing what ideas you get.

Mine is a tiny bathroom so impossible to get a good photo. I wanted all white but not too modern. Our house is over 100 years old. Houzz likes to call it transitional style. I do intend to add colour (yes, I can do it!) with towels, pictures and other decor when we are finished. I am happy with the subway tile and how it ties in with my kitchen (which also has subway tile). I also like the old fashioned herringbone floor (my idea, you can't get it here so I had to have big tiles cut down to achieve it). In hindsight I wish I had gone for a warmer colour bench top on the vanity. I love your hex tile and would have done the same but my dh vetoed it. Ms Mary's bathrooms are super glam.

Brooklyn, that is lovely. I love an all white bathroom. I've seen small herringbone tiles and they are definitely a possibility. My husband loves the hexagons, but is unsure about some modern hardware I like, as in the picture below.

ETA: We have orange rugs and towels in the bathroom we redid last year. I just put them away for Christmas. So color is easy!

Thank you! I prefer modern hardware too. We went for a modern Italian mixer tap and modern handles etc. You can see the door handles. I wanted a modern rain type shower head but hubby did not like that so we settled on an adjustable one that can be used both ways. I thought about a timber vanity but because the bathroom is small with no windows I was worried about lack of ventilation leading to moisture damage. But I really like the warmth of timber. I was very influenced by the blog of Maria Killam - a Canadian colour consultant. I highly recommend checking it out.

Now the bathroom has a large (tub sized) shower with glass doors. I have a difficult/impossible time cleaning the shower pan, the metal tracks, and the glass doors. We're putting in a tub and plan on a shower curtain, which can be laundered or tossed. We're putting in the same shower head on a hose. It's perfect for bathing dogs!

I love the style of your door handle. That is the aesthetic I'm attracted to.

I've never heard of anyone with hot water in the back yard. Is that common in your area? We had to bathe our Scottie a few weeks ago when he got skunked, yet again. We had already had some snow, and it was quite chilly. Here's the mighty hunter...

Oh, he is adorable! He actually got skunked or is that just an expression? That is amazing because we don't have skunks here. Definitely not common to have hot water in the backyard - our plumber thought we were mad. But I don't like to wash our dog in cold water and (being a German shepherd cross) she is too big to wash inside.

We used to have a Labrador Retriever and bathed her outside. But we lived on the Texas Gulf Coast where it was much warmer.

The Scottie has been skunked four times, by skunks. He always gets skunked at night, sometimes in summer and sometimes in winter. We keep skunk washing materials in the bathroom!

JAileen, it is SOO easy to see kangaroos over here one you are out of the cities. I used to work at a small regional uni campus and I'd see them in the morning on the oval. The town I lived in had wetlands and we'd see them there frequently too. They are in no sense an endangered species or anything!!

For cuteness in kangaroos my favourite experience was when we saw a tiny tiny joey hop out of his mother pouch and do little circles round his mother.

And that's all I can contribute to this interesting thread as we have never done any bathroom renos beyond replacing things that fall off!

My sister lives near the beach so has an outdoor shower with hot water. Maybe it's an Australian thing?

Anne, I hope I get to Australia some day, and not just to see kangaroos. I think once my husband retires we might be able to go.

Helen, I've heard of people in Hawaii and other warm places having outdoor showers, so I guess I was thinking of a hot water faucet out in the yard, rather than next to the house. In our climate, high desert, we have to irrigate everything. But in winter, everything outdoors is shut down to prevent freeze damage.

Everyone thinks tomato juice to get out skunk. We use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap. We keep those items plus a dedicated bowl under the sink in the bathroom. It's not perfect, but it does get most of the stink out.

I can't top Mary's and Brooklyn's fabulous bathrooms, but wish you luck with your renovation project.
I could certainly do with a hot tap outside for my own mucky pup. He has to put up with a stone-cold hose down!

Helen, yes, well, it's a powerful stink. A skunk smell in the distance is nothing like the up close stink. Up close it smells like a chemical factory blew up. I think the Scottie wants revenge on the skunk and that's why he keeps going back. I can't figure it out otherwise!

I don't know. There's a free Pinterest app for the iPhone and I imagine for the iPad. Maybe download it and search for my user name.

I am about to dive back into Pinterest and Houzz and my paper inspiration files to redo our master bath -- it is horrible and getting worse by the day. One sink doesn't work, there's a hole in the wall in the shower, fluorescent overhead lighting, the fixtures are bad 80s brass tone... We've waited so long! The trouble is, I know enough about interior design to be dangerous. I have some training but I worry I don't have enough experience to think of all the best design ideas on my own. Hence my procrastination. It's a bit of a tricky space too, not very big, with angled ceilings, a skylight, and a beam running through it. Our style is quite contemporary, but I don't want anything cold or dark. Good light is a necessity! Also need to find a really good contractor, which seem to be a rarity.

JAileen and Mary, your new baths are so inspiring!

A good contractor is paramount. We using the same one as last time, and told him we wanted the same tile guy who did a great job. The bathroom we redid last year was over 50 years old. The one we're planning on replacing now is only 15 years old.

I definitely recommend Houzz.com. I went through at least 125 pages of pictures of small bathrooms. For some unknown reason I still can't access Pinterest. I've heard it's great, though!
