Should shearling/fur be on the outside or inside of a garment?

In terms of warmth and comfort, should shearling/fur ideally be on the outside or inside of a jacket/coat? I’ve read conflicting opinions and have seen both styles sported, so I’m wondering what the difference between the two is in regulating body temperature.

If I had a shearling coat, I would want the leather side out, woolly side in. In cold temps, it would be instantly warmer and cozier, I think.

I wear it on the inside because it seems to me that the texture helps trap warmth in the air between bits of "wool" or whatever you call it. Same with faux fur for me, to the inside to trap warm air.

For humans, I can't say for sure. Animals, however, always wear fur on the outside. Warm greetings from The Cat.

The one real shearling jacket I have has the fur on the inside . It is the single warmest jacket or coat I own - probably 15 years old at this point too . I don’t wear it often anymore because of the fur issue but it’s coming out tonight

I don't think it really matters...either way is going to be warm.

I'm guessing it's warmer inside for the same reason Cindy mentioned. You get better insulation when there's warm air trapped in between layers.

The shearling coats I have seen all have the fur on the inside. My father had one and never wore it because it was too warm for him. I can not imagine such a thing. I have a faux shearling coat and the fur is on the inside. It is not warm. Not.
The fur coats I have seen all have the fur on the outside. My faux fur coat has the fur on the outside and it is of medium warmth. I have heard real fur coats are incredibly warm.

Style Fan, right? I was reading that it had to do with the aerodynamics of fur on the outside, and the fact that fur on the inside traps humidity and is bad for the fur itself. There doesn’t seem to be much on the subject, though.

Yes, it does matter. When it rains you are better off wearing the fur on the outside and in freezing dry weather the fur on the inside. The fur when wet after rain or wet snow will dry and the leather side will not shrink or get damaged. This is why the lambs always wear the wooly side on the outside!
