Should I turn these into cutoffs? ETA: new photos

I bought these Gloria Vanderbilt cropped jeans recently. They fit very well, but have a funky detail at the hem. Should I cut the hem off and turn these into cutoffs, or leave them as is?

I would cut them off to shorts, because I think the style looks dated. But it depends on what you had in mind when you bought them!

Firecracker, thank you. You're right - dated. I was so excited to have pants that fit! I cut them off, and rolled them. They come to just above my knees.

Yay--good cutoffs are hard to find, in the right fit and length. I've been tempted to buy jeans just to cut off, but I haven't done it. I finally found some inexpensive Gap cutoffs this summer that worked for me.

I vote leave them as is. I really like that detail and the overall shape of the jeans - and what is more, these features emphasize your gorgeous, slim legs.

JAileen: I think you made the right call. You will get more use out of them as shorts.

JenniNZ: Daisy Duke is a character from an old TV show, "The Dukes of Hazzard" who wore very short cut-offs. In the US it is common to call shorts with minimal inseams "Daisy Dukes."

Joy, Firecracker, they are very close to my knee. I might cut them a little shorter. I think the roll needs to be very narrow. Daisy Dukes? Hahahahaha! Good one, Joy!

The Cat, Jenni, sorry, too late, I already cut them. I had them for a few weeks without wearing them because I didn't like the hem detail. I sensed they were dated, apparently, but didn't realize it.

It sounds like you're happy with the result. I've bought jeans from the thrift store with the sole intention of cutting them into cut-offs. It's fairly easy to do since the jeans only have to fit at the waist - no worrying about length, boot cut vs. straight, etc.

Here they are. I cut another inch off this morning, so the rolls could be smaller. Do you like the length?

I'm still sad I liked that funky detail. But anyway, I do like this new length too. I hope they weren't brand new! I hope they were thrifted and cheap!

Jenni, they were brand new. However, I didn't care for the detail, and so I hadn't worn them. I like them better now. I'm glad you like the length.

I support your decision to cut them! I don't suppose you'd consider having them tapered a little? The narrowing of the leg pre-cutting was flattering.

I agree with cutting them. Before, they hit right at the calf muscle, so it looked like your leg didn't have any shape. This looks much nicer.

Thanks Fashiontern, I asked my hubby this morning when I got the reply if he knew who Daisy Duke was. He said of course, she was from a TV programme... um... thought a moment... Dukes of Hazzard! Then he said, and don't you know the Katy Perry song, and found it on You Tube for me. All pretty much news to me- then he proudly said, "I could go on the forum!". I can see my husband is up with popular culture much more than I am.

JenniNZ, yes, something that is brand new can be dated. There are a couple of departments I regularly shop in at my local department store that can very easily skew into dated territory. Those lines fit me (which is why I shop them) but the cuts and details aren't at all fresh or current, so I have to watch what I let myself buy there.
