Should I try on...

A dress I saw? It’s in the window of a shop whose windows I love, but they never have my size. It’s leopard print with an asymmetric tiered skirt and a bit of ruffle. I don’t have much cause for such a dress and it’s raining
and the dress is not one that will keep you warm, but it has both edge and frilliness, sorta up my alley. And it probably won’t work for me, knowing this shop... how many times can you go in and strike out before you’re just being embarrassing? I also have a thing about not spending money until I’ve written my cheque to the IRS, which I will not do until the very last moment, lol...

Taking out of the equation the check to the IRS, either sleep on it, or at least find out if it is available in your size. No need to ponder if it isn’t a possibility.

Write the check, but don’t mail until 9pm April 15th. Meanwhile, try on the dress, take a selfie and post a picture for us.

Try it on! Doesn't hurt to just try it on and take a picture and share if you'd like. Then after you've had some time to think about it decide if it's worth it to buy or just good for a picture or two

I wouldn’t think that embarrassment would bother you. Buy it, take it home, try it on & have your mom take a pic. When you return it, say something that makes it sound like you had given it to someone else who rejected it.

Or just breeze in & try the thing on. It does sound up your alley, whether you keep it or not.

Ok. You guys have maybe given me enough ‘oomf’ to get me over my inertia. Maybe I can get there Thursday. If it works, it could be this year’s ‘festive dress.’

It’s something about this shop, I suppose. My failure rate is so high in there, I guess I’m a little shy of it. But I love the windows they do. It’s weird.

If they never have your size, what’s their problem? You’re not a particularly odd size that I can see? Quite petite maybe... not sure of your height.
Otherwise I would just brazen it out. That’s what I do, I march on in to stores I’ve never bought in to look at the racks and get ideas. They never know if I’m going to buy or not, so unless they’re going to look at me in a snooty “Pretty Woman” sort of way “It’s VERY expensive” then I feel I have a right to be there. I don’t know if they can tell I’m a tightwad the minute I walk in. I hope not, because lots of my clothes are good brands that start off expensive but I get at their outlets or on very good sales! I do find the occasional SA just can’t seem to help that sort of snooty look. It’s the difference between “Can I help you?” actually meaning can I help you or meaning stop rifling through my racks if you’re not going to try or buy anything. And if they’re the latter it really puts me off. It’s their problem. I have been known to pay $350 for a dress or boots ( to be fair maybe once each!!) so I could do it again. I don’t wear a sign on my forehead?

It’s funny. They’re not snooty at all. In some ways it would be easier if they were, because then it would be their fault if they can’t serve me. Lol! But they’re a local, neighborhood shop. So then I just feel really bad...

Hey, Rachy, absolutely no reason to feel bad! If they can't fit you, that's their problem. You seem a really mainstream size. So who are they going for? Just tell them you love the thing and are sorry it doesn't fit. Sounds like the designer's problem, not the shop's.

Everything is always Xs or xl. I suspect they just don’t carry a lot of inventory. A couple of each size and that’s it...

That cause that's what's left after the s,m and l customers get through it! If its a small shop they may have lots of the same customers that snap up the good stuff

It’s a local boutique. If you’re half as personable and easy to talk to irl as you are on here, you’ll be able to strike up a conversation with a SA easily. Several people on ylf have me too er relationships with shopkeepers who reserve things in their sizes, or notify them when something they’d like comes in. Whether you try this dress or not, go build that relationship.
