Should I teach my kids to iron got me thinking

That post got me laughing when I recalled that very recently there were sparks flying in my microwave. My eldest, almost 20, was busy making something in a metal bowl.
I taught him how to cook the basics long ago but forgot to mention no metal in the microwave.

Oh no! Nuclear meltdown!

My husband was home alone and wanted to repair the sole on his favorite sneakers. The superglue had hardened, so he put it in the microwave to "soften it up." It blew up, made a terrible smell, and the microwave was rendered useless. This is a man with two advanced degrees in engineering!

Whoops. I remember when microwaves were new, exotic technology. Remember all those microwave cookbooks where you could supposedly roast a chicken, etc?

My lovely spouse recently rendered our microwave inoperable by cleaning the inside with 409, instead of warm soapy water. Fortunately he researched it and replaced the wave plate, which was $5 or something on the internet, which fixed it.

A friend of mine put popcorn in the microwave for 30 minutes instead of 3. She didn't realize until the fire alarms went off and her entire dorm was evacuated.

On my first day in a new-to-me office, we had to evacuate at lunch time because of a fire upstairs, caused by university students trying to dry out running shoes in the microwave.

The funniest part of it is, it was my receptionist's fiance who came to pick her up for lunch and noticed the flames coming from an upstairs window. The office was across the street from, and in direct eyesight of, the town fire department.

Uh oh, like Diana's friend, I have to 'fess up to accidentally punching an extra "0" when setting the timer for microwave popcorn. Fortunately I smelled the burned popcorn before the house caught on fire!

My DD, who won't be able to iron, once put a chocolate chip cookie in the microwave for 4 minutes. It smelled every time we used the microwave for a couple months. I did teach her to unplug the toaster before removing anything with a metal utensil. And she does know about metal in the microwave.
