Should i splurge on this Free People top?

Ugh, you guys, i fell in instant love with this top the moment i laid eyes on it:

It's way more than i normally spend on shirts but i feel like it's unique enough to splurge on? Please feel free to point me out if i'm wrong (with pictures and links *_*)!

I love the lace layering top they have underneath it too. I don't currently have one in black, but i feel like it *should* be easy enough to find at a reasonable price point. But if not what are some ideas for other layering options? Do you think a solid black tissue thin long sleeve t would work? Any other necklines besides boatneck? I just want to make sure i have other options as i don't want to buy and then have it sit in my closet if i don't have the appropriate piece to go underneath!

It is supercute and I can totally seeing you wear it - how often do you think you'll be able to trot it out? Do you think it will feel past-trendy to you in six months? It is a lot to pay for a top like that, but if you adore it try it out (that's always my philosophy).

These are smart questions! Right now i feel like i like it enough to continue wearing it even if it's not trendy anymore. I love plaid, i love teal, i love exposed zippers and i love shirts in this shape and i find them hard to come by in my usual price point.

As for how often i'll be able to trot it out...i'm not sure. It's obviously not a very warm top and it's not something i could really put a cardigan over unless it was maybe very, very cropped and even then i'm not sure it would look right.

Depends on what your threshold for cost per wear is. For me, it would be too high. I like to end up about $5 CPW on fancier tops and down to $1 on more basic shirts. This is different for everybody and honestly I've only spent over $100 on an item a select few times in my whole life.

Lol Mo, me too. I'm trying to think of when i've ever spent over $100 and i'm pretty sure it's only been on my houndstooth coat i bought 3 years ago.

I've honestly never really given much though to cost per wear as i don't normally buy any investment pieces...

hmm..like the model - my black high waisted shorts + tights + combat boots

black skinny jeans + heeled ankle boots

and then i dunno...depending on how long it falls on me maybe some faux leather leggings? I doubt it would be long enough for that though. I don't think i'd want to put a black bandage skirt under it....

did i fail? lol

thanks for the lace top link! i wish it didn't have those banded cuffs though...if i scrunched them up maybe i wouldn't care?

Oh and don't settle on that top if it isn't right. The MOA is full of inexpensive lacy long sleeve tops. (I'm sure).

I'd suggest you see if you can find an FP store, or check it out at Macy's (they carry many FP pieces) before buying. Well, that is if you are return phobic as I am. I love a lot of the FP products but find they vary in quality quite a bit.

I am with modgrl on this one. It looks like something you would find at F21, joyce leslie or charlotte russe. a lot of money for something so flimsy -looking.

Ooook guys. I will be very upset if i did buy this top and then see something similiar at one of the stores mentioned above so i will wait for now. But if i don't and this top sells out....sad face. Orrrrrrr maybe it will go on sale!

Hm, this is a tough one. How long is the FP return policy? Could you hang onto it for a month and see what the other stores turn out?

FP is one of those stores where some of the items will be ubiquitous, and some you will never see again... and I have no idea how to tell which is which.

I don't know. You have such a quick turnover with your clothing that the price tag seems a bit steep. I feel like you'll wear this once and it'll be totally kick ass, maybe wear it again and then ... you'll be on to the next IT item. There has to be a lower cost equally cool alternative for this top.

Rae - I noticed that too! I also have no idea how to tell which is which. I'll have to look into the return policy. Thanks for the idea.

Girl X - That.....does kind of sound like me... >.> I'm trying to be less this way though - focusing on adding things to my closet that i really love and i feel like this top would be that way? But then again it's always hard for me to tell until i actually aquire the piece and have it for awhile.
