Should I size down in this EF sweater?

This Eileen Fisher top was one of Angie's "gray" picks from Nordstrom. My eye had caught an Alice + Olivia top in a similar design, but when I looked at it in the store I didn't like it. I then ordered this one in my usual M size, but only later noted that it might be a good idea to size down. M in this top is 10-12 and I usually wear an 8-10, which is an M in many brands.

My DH likes it, my sis and cousin like it, but I still think it is a bit big. (I wish I had ordered two.) What do you think? Shoulders, upper arms, bottom? I lightened it so you can see the contrast between the bottom and the pants.

One more factor--I can no longer wear even merino wool against my skin, so I will wear a lightweight silk or cotton tee under it, and will find one that doesn't show.

Also, I haven't ironed it yet. It will hand better when pressed.

#1 is Nordstrom top as it appears online.
## 2-4 are top on me.
# 4-6 are an EF angle front sweater I bought a few days later--tried on in store, everyone agreed the small looked better. This is the small and I'm holding it closed. (It comes with a stylized safety pin.)

You may also notice that with my second highlighting, my hair is now quite blonde. It is transitional.

Love the new sweater in 4-6.

I have a feeling I would love 2/3 better in that size as well. It's more the length than anything that feels a bit off, at least with flats. I suspect it would just fall a bit more neatly in the smaller size, assuming you can still exchange for it.

I find that EF runs enormous and also very long. You might want to try a size down and/or a petite. I don't know if the petites are sized smaller widthwise as well though.

I'd try a smaller size of the first one. It's the length that looks a little overwhelming on you. Love the black sweater. It looks fab with the skirt and imagine it would go with lots of things in your closet.

I returned the top to Nordstrom today. They have ordered a small to be sent to the store where I can try it on and see if I like it better in the smaller size.

Thanks for confirming my feelings that went against "popular opinion." Next time something doesn't feel quite right to me I will send it right back.

As a footnote, I bought a couple of the Caslon long sleeved cotton pullovers that I like to wear under wool or cashmere in the colder months. Size: L. And they fit me perfectly. Also, back at the turn of the century, I bought an Ellen Tracy cardi in a petite size. You just cannot go by the number or letter on the garment and get perfect fit.

I've tried a few EF things and it's easy to get overwhelmed. I got a petite XS in one item for mazimum down-size-ness! So petites are also an option (for items that come in P) for length issues.

@Susan: I was at VF today too! I was returning/exchanging the 1K pair of jeans I ordered for DDs! I wish I bumped into you when I took a short detour into Nordies

I thought it looked really good from the front but can see a bit of excess fabric in the upper torso from the back. Perhaps a size down would be better. I do like it on you though.

I'm glad you are trying it a size smaller. I see the extra fabric (especially from the back) that dianthus noticed. I bet you'll love it in the smaller size! I love the black sweater!
