Should I let my daughter grow her fringe (bangs) out?

She wants to as her older sister is doing it. She is four. I wouldn't object but she has a scar on her forehead that looks like a white line that sort of continues from where her center part is for nearly an inch.
What do you think?

Let her grow it out if she wants. It's just hair- she can always cut it again if she doesn't like it. My daughter has a surgical scar on her neck. It bothers me much more than it bothers her.

My policy with my kids' hair is that once they're old enough to have an opinion and voice it, I'll let them do it, as long as they cooperate with the upkeep of that style (last year my son wanted his hair like Zac Effron in High School Musical - so we grew it out, now he wants "tall hair" so he's got a faux-hawk.) I question whether a 4 year old will put up with the growing out process, so I'd make that a condition ("you have to keep it out of your face" type thing) but it's her hair.

I think that as long as your daughter doesn't have any insecurities about her scar then you're lucky. Why encourage her to develop an insecurity about it?

My little cousin who is much younger than me was the cutest little girl. Her ears protruded a little bit but not freakishly so. Unfortunately her mother was embarrassed by them and never let her put her hair back. As long as I've known her she has her hair hanging down and doesn't dare to pin it back or put it in a pony tail. It's very sad to make a child dislike who they are.

I echo dusty. I wouldn't make a big deal about the scar it's great if she accepts it as part of what makes her individual and special. I see so many youngsters at work who think they are too fat, too thin, wrong colour skin etc x

Yes, if she doesn't mind her scar showing, then let her grow out her bangs. They're only little with hardly any insecurities for such a short time. She'll have her whole adult life to stress over things, let her enjoy her youthful confidence while she can. : )

Anne, I think you should let her. My philosophy has always been to let my children make their own choices as long as it is not detrimental to their health or well being. You'll be giving her an opportunity to have a voice in decision making and to develop confidence in her ability to make choices. Think about it, isn't it every parent's goal to raise confident, self motivated and independent young adults? Your daughter sounds like she has confidence in herself and that is a wonderful thing, especially at age 4!

Oh Anne my 5 year old has just decided to grow hers out this year too!

We made it a condition that she had to let me clip it back every day, and now that its in her eyes, she's more than willing to let me do it. I actually plait it and then clip it back - although if I braid her hair its now long enough to go in - very exciting!

And I so agree with not making a big deal out of the scar - I'm amazed at the confidence and self-love that my daughters have and don't want to do anything to lessen that in any way too soon... it will happen soon enough I'm sure

Em has a surgical scar on her belly and she is not even remotely phased by it - in fact I've had to teach her not to go lifting her clothes up to show everyone LOL

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful replies; I will use them on DH, who is the one reluctant about the idea. I suspect he thinks that people might treat her differently, if they see it. She herself is indeed not worried about it.

I like Dusty's idea of making it a of condition that she lets me make the growing out bits are tidy - haven't always got that with her older sister; however I took up Theresa's idea this morning with DD6 of plaiting the fringe and she liked that.

Good Luck with DH Anne...

Glad the plaiting worked on DD6! Em's hair is super fluffy and curly so if its not pinned down strictly its just wild, so plaiting is all that holds her hair reasonably together.
