Should I keep the yellow dress?

I posted a couple of months ago that I had these red boots, but was not wearing them much. That seems to have changed, thanks to the suggestions of the forum. I have been wearing my boots regularly and recently added these two maximal dresses into my wardrobe with the view that they would be fun to wear with the red boots.

The gold velvet dress was only bought 2 days ago, so I am yet to wear it. I can return it if you don't think the colours work on me or don't like the style. I was drawn to it because it looked so beautiful on the model, but since this golden yellow is not a colour that I have worn before, I am happy to accept if it does not work on me.

The brocade dress has been a winner, whenever I wear it I get strangers telling me how much they love this dress. It fits perfectly, as if it were made for me.

So two additional items to wear with my red boots.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

I like them both on you. I think the gold dress looks great with the boots, and the colour is totally fine. I think the lipstick goes a long way to tying it in with your skin tone.

Both dresses are very beautiful on you! I love how you combine them with the red boots - such an interesting look. To my eye it is a movie star glamour with a touch of romantic boho. Gorgeous.

The color looks great on you and the dress fits you well. I think it looks better on you than on the model. I vote you should keep It! I’m so happy to see someone wearing red boots! I wore mine yesterday because they make me feel so happy. Yours are gorgeous!

Rachy, well I have to keep it if it is a Rachylou dress! I cannot happily wear overtly sexy dresses, so this is probably a good way for me to have fun with a more out there style.

JenniNZ, thank you. I always appreciate your feedback, and I think given these boots are a bit higher than ankle boots getting dress proportions right has been tricky.

I see how strangers would stop you in the street for the darker brocade one, it's so wow on you. But the yellow gold one could prove VERY useful for a blonde like you. It has enough va-va-voom in the cut, yet the loghter color, closer to your natural coloring, doesn't stand out, which could prove to become an ally for a more casual, wow-yet-not-in-your-face outfit. I can envision it under darker toppers in cooler temps.

Both dresses have a very different aesthtic, despite similar cuts, and you illustrate this beautifully. It's very educational to see. The print and color send off different vibes that can both be exploited to your advantage. Where the red boots infuse lightness and spice in the brocade dress, they anchor the yellow one, set the tone, give it just that little oomph to make it less etheral. I imagine the golden dress ni nude pumps would look quite different too, and that would also be interesting to see.

Krish - I will keep the yellow dress and so glad that you like it. I was a bit worried that it skewed too young on me. I will have to try it with nude pumps, a great suggestion to tone it down.

Sterling, I do like boho, but like to keep it polished rather than the earthy boho aesthetic which feels a bit fake on me, although I love the look on others.

I’m a bit of a spanner, as I much prefer the brocade dress. I would prefer to see a lighter, less muddy yellow on you with your beautiful coloring. I feel like the mustard dress is wearing you a bit.

Janet - thank you for being honest and I appreciate that you have said this, because often people think things like this but don't want to upset the person, so keep quite. However, this forum is here to help us not make these kind of mistakes! I have yet to show my husband this dress, but I am pretty sure he will not like it (the yellow dress). If it was up to him I would be dressed head to toe in body con black.

Angie - with both of these, I am trying to get a couple of more contemporary and fun pieces into my wardrobe to break up some of the more classic items that I wear. I do feel that I need to make the most of the maximal trend.

Kellygirl - I really love the boots too, so comfy and a nice cheery colour.

Citygirldc - I am not surprised that you think this, because this is definitely not a colour that I would think of as being typically me and I expected many more comments like this. Good to have you and Janet's view.

Ummlila - I always appreciate your feedback and am glad that you like both dresses, especially with the red boots, as I do want to wear them more.

jipp - Glad you think these dresses work with the boots. I do enjoy a boots and dress combination for even semi dressy occasions.

Smittie - yes, both of these are definitely up there on the maximal scale. It shows that I am a child/teen of the 80's to be so into the maximal trend - I must have been absorbing all the clothing from Dallas and Dynasty....

Brooklyn - thank you, I am glad you like these dresses, as I can see me wearing them, especially the brocade dress which I have already worn quite a bit to cocktail functions for my work (although I wore a more classic black heel).

With husbands, friends,children: when they don't like something, I bear it in mind... but if I still really like it myself I will still wear it. I have a dress which I bought in St Kilda in Melbourne, 2015,in a shop's closing down sale- for $5. It is an OTT bright dress which I call my rose garden dress after its brand and also because it has big pink and purple roses on it. My best friend was with me, she had her doubts, my husband isn't sure, my daughter dislikes the different colours and beading around the neck, but still let me wear it to her graduation. It has also been to a wedding. I wear it with my purple shoes and it makes me happy.
Here's me in it with 2 friends at a Brazilian themed 60th birthday of the one in the middle. If they make US happy, isn't that most important?

Jenni - I think you look gorgeous in this dress, its vibrancy is perfect for a fun party or special occasion. You are very wise, it is how we feel in items that really counts. Confidence is to wear what you like and feel authentic in. So whilst this dress is a statement, I don't feel that it will overwhelm me if I wear it when I want to be in the mood to have fun. It is wearing very subdued and conservative clothing that seems less authentic for me.

Love both dresses on you but especially the gold since it is so unusual. If you are still unsure about the color, maybe you take another photo or two in better light? You may have to corral someone to help you out. . .

DonnaF - yes part of the appeal of the yellow dress is that it is so different.

Joy - I did, I thought Amal Clooney looked particularly stunning in her yellow dress and hat, although I have yet to see her look anything less than fabulous, she is very beautiful.
