Should I get these "diaper pants" from Project Runway?

So my acquaintance/friend/local designer Alexandria Von Bromssen is on Project Runway this year! So excited for her. I've mentioned her boutique and clothes here before.

Anyhow, she won last night's glamping challenge, in which the designers had to come up with an editorial, high-end look inspired by a camping trip.

I literally gasped when the model came out on the runway. The back detail of the denim jacket, the cool harem pants, wow! One of the judges, Zac Posen, said he hated "poopy pants" but was swayed by this interpretation.

I know these pants are pretty extreme, fashionwise, but I'm loving them. Do you think it'd be worth it to have Alex make up a pair for me, or are you thinking, "Are you cray-cray, girl?"

If I do get a pair, what color should they be? Black seems like it'd be boring and not show the detail very well.

Oh no. No no no no. Unless they are free. The front looks like her crotch has elephantiasis. Perhaps your friend has something less challenging to wear that you could try, instead?

Of course, if I'm raining on your parade, feel free to pull out your umbrella. But I just can't see wearing these in real life.

I think that these pants would be difficult to wear - and you'd have to wear them with a crop top like the model is. I don't think they're a win in my book, but maybe they can be "toned down" for non-runway wear?

I can picture you in them and I think they will balance your shoulder line. Fun for going out if you can figure out the right topper.

I actually don't mind them... the front almost looks like a bubble skirt with biker shorts under. But NOT in white... I like Anna's gray tweed idea!

Thanks for your input everyone! Yes, definitely not white In the context of the competition, it was meant to evoke "longjohns" (camping) or some such, but yeah the trick is to translate the look into real life.

I do have two pairs of harem pants (though not as extreme) so I think I can style these similarly.

Anna, a tweedy gray is an awesome idea! Actually, it's perfect for the fall. The beauty of working with a designer is we can modify and fit and such so it works in real life. Well, that's my hope anyhow.

I just spent the last hour or so shooting the breeze with Alex and mentioned the pants to her, so we might work something out. She had just gotten back from New York. Interesting stories about the show!

Oh, I think definitely YES!! I love Anna's idea of a tweedy grey for you. To me they don't look like pants with elephantitis, but like a sort of skirt/pant. Super cool on the model.

Oh wow - these are so cool - I love. I'd definitely go for a pair of these - gray tweed sounds wonderful. To me, they look like a sweatshirt skirt in the front and pants in the back. How fun to have your friend on PR! I love that show - I DVR'd last night's episode but haven't watched it yet (on my list of things to do this weekend.) I would love to hear the behind the scenes stories! I bet they're wild!

I'm a spanner along with IK. They are just structured such that instead of having the empty diaper look ala harem pants, they actually look full of... something - droopy flesh? Diaper filling?

Regardless, though, if this is a local designer whom you know and most especially if the piece is something that can be tweaked to suit you (change in fabric or subtle changes in style to increase wearability), then I can understand why you would want to purchase and work with this designer.

And keep in mind that I have a poison eye for this sort of thing and I fully admit that I might be tragically unhip, so given that my opinions are so far out of the mainstream of the thread I am probably off-base here.

Marley -- hope that wasn't a big spoiler for you; sorry about that!

Echo -- actually, I think you and IK reflect a fairly mainstream view of those pants, if the Project Runway comments on the design is any indication. This design is pretty extreme, unlike the dropped crotch designs we've been seen the past few seasons.

Marlene -- I suspect the jacket will be more pricey than the pants because of the work involved, but why not, I can check with her

Cciele - just wanted you to know that I watched PR last night - and Alexandria's outfit was even more stunning when you could see it actually move! I'm so glad that she won - she needed that after last week's disaster!
I hope that she had fun participating on the show, regardless of the final results.
