Shorts with jackets?

I have been amusing myself this morning constructing a winter lookbook from what I have in my closet already. It has been surprisingly helpful in allowing me to identify the silhouettes I am attracted to, which of my clothes I truly love and which pieces are super-versatile. I may take some photos and post them for your amusement at a later date.

Anyway, I have a pair of high waisted, tailored black shorts that I have been wearing for smart casual occasions recently, usually with a dressy short sleeved top. Since Brisbane does not get very cold, I was thinking I could continue to wear them with a jacket and maybe some boots, especially if I am wearing them at night when it is a bit cooler. And then I thought that maybe this would look horribly seasonally confused. What are your thoughts on shorts worn with jackets (or indeed any long-sleeved top)?

Personally I love the look and if I could make it work for me I would wear the look myself. How about some cut out boots that are trending...that would perhaps lessen the seasonal confusion?

Here in NYC we often wear walking shorts in the winter. I unfortunately don't have any currently, but if I did I would wear them with tights, boots and a blazer or jacket of some type. Of course I would not wear them in today's weather... snow, sleet and freezing rain.

That's good to hear, Catnip. Living in such a temperate climate, I sometimes wonder if my idea of what is seasonally appropriate is a bit skewed.

I think the shorts with jacket would be great. I wear that look sometimes. California is so mild that all sorts of seasonally confused combos make perfect sense here - I focus on coordinating the fabric weights or textures rather than worrying about whether shorts and a sweater is inherently weird.

I am seasonally confused and proud! Well, I've been slowly warming up to trousers this year, having up to now been a convinced short shorts and high boots wearer. Year around. Here are some of the looks I've pulled off on Austrian autumn & winter weather:

Leather shorts + booties or tall boots. The favorite version - even among fabbers - was the one with tall boots. When temperatures drop, this outfit receives either a black wool coat that hits me slightly above the knees or a cocoon dark grey coat that hits me mid-thigh as an outdoor layer.

Train travel outfit, with wool shorts and tall boots. Not shown and as an outdoor layer is a navy polyamide coat (military details & cut) that hits me slightly above the knees.

(And a spring time bonus here.)

I love the idea. I'm not a big stickler on seasonally confused, unless it's very extreme. I think a walking short 'suit' of a sort is a great look.

Think of it this way, skirt suits are completely mainstream. Shorts are about as much material on you as a skirt, and about the same level of warmth or coolness. It should follow that they would be a great stand in.

Jacket and shorts? Nothing wrong with that. I'd just keep the weights close when it comes to styling pieces together but my motto, if I love my look, it doesn't matter to me what "they say" because who are "they" anyway?

I'm with catnip, here in NYC the trend to wear shorts with tights and boots is pulled off by the hippest gals. It works especially well with a girly blouse and a statement necklace. And a hat works really well too, listen to me - accessorizing my fantasy outfit lol
