Travel capsule: shorts instead of a scarf

I thought about getting a new scarf for my travel capsule and posted about it here. The blue scarf I had ordered arrived today, but I've already taken it back to the post office - really bad quality for the price! Definitely not worth keeping. But I stumbled upon another item today that I wanted to give a try, some discontinued Icebreaker shorts that were priced the same as the scarf! If they fit they might be a much better addition to the travel capsule (and the wardrobe in general). They're supposed to be a heathery black/ dark grey, made out of 70% merino wool and 30% cotton. Reviews said the fabric would feel substantial, like premium denim. They have a definite dress pants vibe to them... They definitely don't look like practical hiking shorts!

I could live in Icebreaker clothes. I don't do as much camping as I used to but I really want to stock up for travel. That's a great travel capsule.

Thanks Suz! Fingers crossed they fit. It's interesting, sometimes going for gear really is the best solution. And as seen with your dress you can find stylish pieces if you look hard enough.

Thanks Greyscale! I only have Icebreaker base layers so far (leggings, cami and socks), but I've always planned to also add some outerlayers. I've already gotten so much use out of the pieces I have...

Astrid, I'm sure I just missed it - (been away for a month) - but where are you going to?

I'll be away for three weeks in August - first two weeks in Brittany with most of the family and then another week back at home. I'll be flying to Paris and meeting up with the rest of the family there who will drive by car from home. I have only carry-on luggage for the flight, so I'm going to pack light for the three weeks. I will always have the possibility to do laundry, so it shouldn't be a problem.

The travel capsule is still a work in progress, I don't consider it finished yet... There might still be some changes or additions.

I hope they fit! They don't at all look like gear, what a find. Your capsule is still quite dark, will that be ok for you?

Thanks Aida! One reviewer said she returned them because she felt like it would be strange to wear office wear on the hiking trail. It's true that it still is rather dark overall, but if it all works so well together... I just remembered another scarf that I have that I could take, the one below. Thin cotton, so not really for warmth, more for accessorizing. When it's cold I'd probably be fine without a scarf if I wear the wool pullover and the rain jacket. Maybe I'm going to take my oversized blue button down too, although I'd have to wear it wrinkled and make peace with it. I think I'm going to test it out with the shorts once they arrive.

I like that scarf! It looks like it'd work nicely with all your pieces, and would certainly brighten or smarten up any of your outfits as needed. The oversized blue button-down shirt looks comfy and breezy; if the fabric is breathable it might be a better option for surprise hot weather than one of the tees. I don't mind it wrinkly, adds to the "ease" of the look. Should work nicely with the shorts, too.

Yes, I do think I'm going to pack the button down. It's definitely breezy (it's 70% cotton 30% silk). And that way I'd have something a bit fancier. The scarf is probably a good idea too. I also need a second pair of long pants, one pair of jeans is definitely not enough. They take a while to dry after all.

The shorts look great. I've never seen anything like them. I think they're a tremendous addition to your capsule. I'm also loving the scarf and blue button-down additions!

They look wonderful, and a shout out for icebreaker that use NZ Merino wool and that started off here. Their stuff is good quality indeed.

Those shorts look great. I'm a big fan of Icebreaker clothing. At their best they go beyond gear. I have a few of their merino base layers and they are winter staples for me. They've worn beautifully.

Looks good to me! I like your capsule. I'll have to try Icebreaker one of these days. Living where I do, it certainly would work well with our climate. Hope the shorts fit - they'll fit in very nicely.

Jackie, try them! You won't regret it. I know they're expensive but it's worth it. I bought all of my pieces on sale.

Maneera, yes! I love that they look more fancy than the usual outdoor shorts. They would look appropriate both in Paris and on the beach. And I really need to take pictures of both the scarf and the button down, then I can add them to the capsule...
