Shortening a cashmere sweater coat by cutting it?

Can I shorten a cashmere sweater coat/cardigan by simply cutting the hem? For fun, I tried hemming it, and it looks ridiculous. But, keeping it long makes me look like I'm wearing a bathrobe with my petite size. I hemmed it to just below my knees, to see what it would look like and I like that length. Otherwise, at full length, it comes down to my lower calf. Thoughts? Looking for answers from anyone who knows what to do and is familiar with this. Thanks!

It'll unravel if you don't finish the edge somehow. You need a hem or binding of some sort. If the stitches are pretty small a tailor might be able to finish the edging with a serger although I dont personally know what the limitations of that would be.

ETA: you could cut and then hem fairly close to the edge for a pretty minimal effect. Again I'd prob have a tailor look at it as I think you want a fine, right seam.

Agree it would probably unravel if left as a raw hem.

Thanks, Diana, and as you explain it, this makes good sense and I'll show my tailor after the holidays. I think the do-it-yourself technique is a good option if the tailor route is too expensive. Thanks, zoiechic, for confirming this, as well. I'm not a knitter or seamstress and can always rely on my friends from the YLF forum, gratefully. ^^

As Diana says, you definitely need a plan for finishing the hem. It may be somewhat complicated by the ribbed texture of the sweater. Or not, depending on how your tailor approaches it. I've "redesigned" a boring cashmere sweater before without a problem.

Agree, it would unravel if you just cut it. Can we see it on you? Maybe it isn't as bad as you think. I often have this same issue with sweaters, bummer they don't come in a petite more often.

I agree with what others have said. It would need to be finished with a serger and hemmed up or have a binding put around it like Alexandra has done on her cardigan.
