Short skirt, tall shoes

Saw a lass in a mini-skirt length sweater dress, tights and heels. Nothing cheap and sleazy, but I realised I don't like the proportions. Same problem as leggings as pants. Just looked to me like someone forgot the bottom part of their outfit.

I was just thinking, how strange it should strike me that way. Have to think about that. Maybe a coat would have made it all different for me...

Would you like it more if the dress had a defined waist? What about a combination of a top, a miniskirt and heels?

For me a defined waist makes a big difference, especially with high hemline dresses.

My eye expects to see a "third piece" to complete an outfit. With that, you barely have a second piece. Maybe tall boots instead of heels would look more satisfying?

Good point about a defined waist. I can see that making a difference for me with the heels ... or flat boots.

But it being winter, maybe I really did want to see a third piece.

I like miniskirts with tall boots. Legwarmers work too, from a proportions standpoint. I agree that it feels like somethings missing whenever I do a short skirt with low shoes.

That said, I don't find minidresses easy to wear -- especially since tops have gotten longer and more tunic-y, minidresses really don't feel like a standalone outfit. Maybe she should've tried Angie's kick flare formula...

Actually, yeah. I probably don't like ballet flats with skater skirts - by ballet I mean flats with no soles or heel. It's well, like, are you a ballet class escapee?

Oops, I often wear the short sweater dress/heels combination!

I'm definitely with you re the ballet pumps, look horrendous on anyone, make you look short and dumpy!

LOL Rachel! You know your getting old when you need to ask this question: What kind of mini? Wrist length or fingertip? (Wrist being my polite way of saying "who ha" ). I have to assume you mean wrist! I was at my nephews Bar Mitzvah and all his female friends wore them except for one. We were feeling a bit sorry for this girl because she was obviously the odd one out, however, she was the only one who could move around in comfort! No one else could sit without exposing their undies and netherworld! It was pure entertainment for the adults to watch how these girls tortured themselves and we pondered how they would talk about their craziness at doing this in the future.

No, maybe it's old-fashioned of me but I don't like the combination of short skirt/dress with high heels. It just looks a bit hoochy to me. Then again, I don't really like high heels in general so take it with a grain of salt...

Bummer. I wear shorter skirts frequently in the winter. It's hard not to when you're tall.

But this was micro mini length, and it was a dress also, not a skirt. It's interesting. Might have been ok with it if it had been a skirt and it was clearer it wasn't simply a long top.

I can imagine how the proportions would be *off* unless you are talking about a gal with very short legs. The same height heels but in a bootie might appear more balanced. But heels and tights?!?

I think I get what you mean about " third piece" especially with an oversized sweater. It doesn't "look" like a dress, it looks like a sweater. The shape of the hem can create the same effect. I saw a young lady in a short shirt-tail hemmed dress. She wore lacy stockings and heels. The shirt-tail hem made it look like she needed a bit of skirt.

I think it is all in the context. A gaggle of teens in minis is not the same thing as a single woman strutting down the street. And of course it matters which street and what time of day!

Yes. All good points - optical length of leg from hem to shoe, the hem type, and while the girl was young, she wasn't a school girl... it being mid-morning and obviously she was not at school (!). Although, it would have been an odd outfit for class too I think. Too dressy. She didn't look bad by any means, I should say. It just didn't feel quite at ease.

Rachylou, I'm fully in agreement! I've never liked high heels with short skirts or leggings -- particularly on myself. I'm OK with skinny jeans and heels, as long as the skinnies are true jeans and not painted-on leggings. To me, the heel plus the lack of volume on the lower half makes the woman look like she's going to topple over. This effect is worse if the woman is tall and slim, or if (like me) she's got IT tendencies to begin with.

I DO like the look of short skirts with tall (but flat) boots, though. Or flat oxfords. Block heels look fine, too, as long as they're not taller than about two inches.
