short shorts - fun or tacky?

My Calvin Klein shorts (pic 1) got returned as undeliverable and they could not ship them back out to me (harumph!) so I'm still looking for patterned or print shorts. Are these funky cool or cougar-tastic? http://www.6pm.com/joes-jeans-.....lley-white I would pair a looser top and flat shoes with them. No tight tank and heels with short shorts for this over 40 yr old!

That's too bad about the CK one - that sounds like an annoying situation. I think the sparkily one will go nicely with your drapy tops

The first pair seem more versatile than the second. Any hope of tracking them down. I think you would wear these in a sophisticated manner, so no concerns about the length at all.

Mo, IMO, it is really hard to tell if something is tacky or not pre-outfit. I think that they are absolutely worth a try the way that you described wearing them. You are in great shape and won't look "tarty". I love that word and had to use it.

The sequins get a bit of a "no" from me, but that may be just because they're not to my taste. Give 'em a whirl and post up some outfit pics. You may convert this doubter!

I don't think anything would look tacky on you Mo:). I like this second pair of shorts and wearing them as described sounds like a great look. You have great legs and see no reason (40 or not) to not wear short shorts if you like them. You carry of all your outfits casual or dressy with style and good taste:)

You have a gorgeous figure, but I would pass on these. The three-inch inseam plus the sequins take them over the top to my eyes. If they were even a couple of inches longer, maybe.

Coming back to edit. . . the sequin ones might be fun for a casual date night. But I'm scratching my head about how to wear them in other settings.

I vote nay. Sorry, Mo. These look far too young to me. I honestly can't think of a situation where both sequin-encrusted and cutoffs are appropriate.
Bummer about the cks though. I really liked those.

Ps - I think sequins are fine. Just not *this many*, kwim?

ETA: Short shorts are fine too, you have the legs for it. I just think this particular pair is OTT with the sequins.

The outfit you've described doesn't sound tacky. It sounds fun. Short-shorts and heels are a big no for me (poison eye) but with flats the shorts sound fine.

Hm, very big bummer about the first ones. I was happily wearing short shorts until this year, and now I'm kinda turned off to them, at least that short. What about longer metallic shorts like Anna has?

I don't care how great a woman's legs are, I think short shorts are a no on anyone over twenty.

I don't mind short shorts, with the qualifier that 3" inseam is what I consider short shorts and the shortest a person should go. I wear them and I'm in my 40s, so you know I don't come to this with a poison eye. I'm with you, though, no high heels and no tanks. Flats are mandatory. Tops for short shorts require a classic or preppy or boho top that is looser and has some coverage or a more modest cut. I'm classic to the core, as you know. Even with my short shorts, I don't think anyone has ever in my entire adult life looked at any outfit I've worn and thought "inappropriate."

So, with my weakness for short shorts confessed...I still say "nay" to the sequins and short shorts. Those are two dangerous, treading-the-cougar-path features colliding in one short. Actually three--the cut off hem instead of a hemmed hem too. Too much! Honestly, I'm not even a fan of the galaxy print ones. I think if you are going to go for an attention getting length, then you have to balance it with a non-attention-getting color or pattern. But again, I'm a classic dresser. If I was super fashionista trendy, it would be different. I'd prefer to stay way back from the edge of edgy with the short short trend versus go full on man-repeller or potential cougar-boundary-pusher.

ETA: Was thinking about how cute the galaxy print would look with a chambray shirt. I could see them as a yes now. Still not loving the sequined pair, though.

I kind of like them, and I think short-shorts and sparkle would work in Florida and for your life-style. I also think you have the legs for them (I don't follow that ridiculous rule of age dressing).

I feel like I ought to like these... they remind me of an Edward Gorey line drawing, and Edward Gorey is cool... but I feel like they're... stylistically confused. Like maybe they think Pillsbury invented the croissant.

Well, if tried to adhere to "rules" about what I should, and shouldn't, wear now that I'm nearing my mid-sixties, I'd have to throw out half my closet. I still wear my sporty summer skirts above my knees, even though said knees look much lumpier than they did in my twenties. Same goes for letting those knees see daylight in mid-length shorts.

That said, the question of whether or not you can wear those particular shorts is more about when, and where, you'd feel comfortable wearing them without feeling vaguely "cougar-tastic" or tacky. My two cents says that sequinned, quasi-Daisy Dukes would be hard to style as funky cool for any one outside of their twenties in most venues.

I am going to pass on the sequin pair. Frustratingly, I am getting nowhere with the CK return. I just know these shorts are now (or soon to be) back in their stock, yet I won't be able to re order them. They are now sold out and not listed in any size on either their website or their eBay page. Here is my recent correspondence:

I say yay. No one said short shorts were exclusively for the young (people in their 20's & younger). I know that My best short short has at least a 4 or 5 inch inseam. If I lose 10 pounds I can do a 3 inch inseam.

I say nay to the sequins (and I'm a magpie) but keep looking. Have you searched for the Calvins from the major dept. stores? I have had good luck with Calvin orders, so sorry yours did not work out so well. Fingers crossed you'll find them.
