Shopping My Closet 4 Realz Y'all!

Right. I have really nice things. Time to enjoy them!

Your job is to keep me honest. The questions for me are NOT, Is it awesome? Do I love it? Would I wear it?

The question is, Is it worth breaking your challenge to buy this? Then, Why?

I mean it, time to get out of the fashion waterfall and into my closet tidal pools, resting on my floaty bed and drinking my margarita. Help me keep the buzz!

I feel I should be hot on your heels after my last 2 weeks of whirlwind acquiring. Good luck to you and I will try and keep you on the straight and narrow! I may have to go to a one item a month pace for the remainder of the year.

How long is your challenge to last, dear IK? And I will definitly take you up on shopping for me when it gets about November. I am coming to the US for Xmas and will want packages waiting for me that are NOT from Santa

Yes, it is so easy to get caught-up in a B.B.B.. cycle and to not have time to actually wear and enjoy so many new items, especially at sale time!
We should all take a deep breath, relax and appreciate what we already have.

I hear you, IK! When I get the urge to buy new I instead take my camera up to my closet and start figuring out new combinations of things I already own.

For the same reason and budget reasons I need to join you in this challenge. Of course total restriction would cause me to fail miserably so the same questions should apply "why is this worth breaking SYC for?". Perhaps limiting to necessities (hosiery and undergarments as needed) and using rewards, consignment $ as it is available will help me not feel so deprived. It's a hard cycle to break, but I definitely have more than enough good usable clothing, I need inspiration to remember that and use the items in a way that makes me happy I have them already and not think "oh if I only had xxx new thing life - and this outfit would be perfect."

IK, pour me a limeade while you're at the clothes bar? I think I'll join you in the closet too (okay, to give us both room to try stuff on, a different closet) --- though it's kinda speculative seeing as I've just drawn on my August SYB budget. But I think it's time for me to ease up and savour the goodies too.

So... you keep asking me hard questions (yeah, any and all of the above) when I threaten to buy or even 'window shop', and I'll do the same. Deal?

You have such spectacular pieces in your closet I am so on board with you shopping in there for whatever period of time you choose. Although your clothes aren't classic in nature but more fashion forward they have a timeless IK vibe to them.

I am joining you! I am going to SYC for at least 6 months. I have one visit with my mum to the thrift store and Winners planned next week, and after that I am shopping my closet. The only exception is I am looking for a pair of tall boots, and when I find them I can buy them.

During the 8 years my DH and I lived in Central America, I shopped my closet every year. We only bought new clothes once a year when we went home to the States for Christmas. The reason was because the clothing manufactured down there was very poor quality and the imported clothing was heavily taxed and cost at least double what the same items would cost in the U.S. There was no internet shopping, either. Anything mail ordered was so heavily taxed that buying it wasn't worth it. I remember the time I needed a U.S. History textbook for my oldest DD. My mom purchased a brand new one from the school board for only $2. She sent it to me, but I ended up paying $20 for it due to the taxes.

On the plus side, I really learned how to create good outfits out of what I had. Had it not been for the fact that I was wearing quality clothing made for me by my mom, I don't think I could have made it for 8 years without buying many new items. I literally only spent about $500 per year on new clothing and accessories for myself. This included buying enough makeup to last for the coming year--until the next time I'd be in the States.

Me and my tiny wardrobe are going to try to not have any additions added for awhile, so count me in for the closet bill! I NEED to just let things "jell" for awhile.

I know I need to follow you and just chill with my wardrobe. I don't think I can do a total SYC but still am trying to minimize shopping for wants and only consider actual wardrobe needs. I'm trying not to browse online or shop in stores unless there's something specific I'm looking for and really need. I know you have a fabulous wardrobe, you have a LOT of nice clothes. And yet I know how hard it is to stop looking and shopping, so I really sympathize. Just keep in mind what is your actual goal for SYC. And anytime you are tempted to spend money on something and don't, write it down so you can keep tabs of all the money you saved instead of spent. You can do it Dana! We'll help you!

Yep, I found that when I was 'allowed' to use some extra cash I went kinda crazy with ordering all those things I'd put in carts online or on a list. Funny thing - I've returned most of it. I think I do better within a budget and set limits. Makes me weigh my purchases, whereas having carte blanche just gets me all whipped into a frenzy.
I'm in with you - back to SYB and only one or two items each month.
