Shopping for wide leg jeans ETA styled pic in comments

I’ve been frustrated with shopping lately, even though all I’m really trying to do is finish updating my pants and jeans capsules. I have had some trouble with these items:

1. Wide leg jeans
2. Navy trousers that are wide or trousers shaped; to replace something that no longer fits well
3. Red pants or jeans (perpetual HEWI, I’m not sure if I only want them in theory and not practice to be honest; most pants are unlined and make my cellulite somewhat visible - something about the color, I guess, even in nice quality pairs)

I seem to between sizes now that rises are higher. For navy pants, I think the ones I ordered from Saint+Sofia will work but I need to exchange for a size down.

I did try on these slim wide legs from Madewell today and brought them home. These are the first ones that have fit me properly. I would want another wash but they aren’t offering that—I am not in love with the whiskering though I’m not totally opposed either. I have a darker wash wide leg jean on order from J Crew so I may choose that instead... IF it works.

I also tried this distressed pair from BR—no pic but they fit. The bottom was too distressed with long threads, but they could be snipped off. The Madewell ones fit slightly better, but I prefer the BR wash

I agree I really like the colour on the BR pair. But the Madewells do fit you very well. Whether the whiskering works for you is really a matter of personal preference -- and I guess will depend, too, on the pair on order. At least you have some good options! Good luck!

Have you tried American Eagle they are always getting new styles in and have jeans from petite to tall.

Oh! I have those BR ones on order to try but they haven't arrived yet. I will let you know what I think.

The Madewell ones look good from what I can tell but I hear you on the whiskering. Sometimes photos exaggerate that effect though. It's weird -- on some of my jeans I positively like it, on some I tolerate it, and on some I dislike it so much I won't buy the jean.

I’m not so sure that they do fit that well. They have that pulling at the crotch issue that happened with a different pair of pants you posted a while back? I’m not sure why that happens.

I would recommend getting the larger size altered to fit! I just recently didn't follow my own advice.. got my hands on some Zara jeans, and chose the smaller size to get the waist to fit better. I neglected the AWFUL crotch fit (tight and pulling), and they are now hanging unworn for the foreseable future....

Yeah, I’m not loving the placement and intensity of that whiskering. I’m avoiding strong whiskering as a rule — it tends to add emphasis right where I don’t want it, although a little subtle bit of it, well-placed (not too low) is ok.

Jenni - most of my pants have a bit of pulling. Many of them are dark enough that you don’t notice it in photos. Sometimes even pants that are too big everywhere else have it, so even if we’re willing to size up and tailor, that may not fix it. I think something about the high waist makes it more likely too. I find this to be an acceptable level, compared to other pants I have and have tried, since the fit in that area was otherwise good. *shrug*

Synne - see above. These don’t feel tight in my crotch at all. It’s just a thing that happens to me with many pants and jeans. I think I’ve seen Angie say it’s pretty common (maybe for pear shapes?) and not necessarily an issue.

You can see it in varying these two I already own. It doesn’t bother me enough to pay to have most of my pants tailored, frankly. And like I said, sizing up doesn’t necessarily get rid of it, anyway. Mary - I had planned to go to Talbots too so now I’ll definitely try to go sooner.

Lesley, I have something coming from J Crew, though not those, I think.

Suz - I may also go back for the BR ones. The one I tried may not correspond to this find since they had more extreme distressing but look otherwise the same. The long strings could be snipped off, though.

Angie - no, just these. It’s hard to find my size in store. I pretty much have to go right away after new styles are released. I may order those if I decide to try these again. Kinda tired of ordering then returning 75%-100% of it, but I guess that’s the way it works these days. :/

Call me crazy, but I think I like them and I even tried the full high waisted tuck.

The thigh whiskering would bug me more if they were tight in the thighs.

Whiskering on jeans can exaggerate the pulling effect, and the pulling is something that pear shapes get more than others (sigh). And, I think if you are particularly short in the rise OR long in the rise, this can happen more or be more obvious, for reasons I don't fully understand. Diana is pear shaped with a short rise and experiences it all the time. Meanwhile, I have a long rise and I can also get that kind of pulling, although it is less noticeable now than when I was younger because my body shape has changed a bit.

I think the first photo exaggerated the look of the whiskering/ pulling because it doesn't look as noticeable at all in the second pic.

Suz, I believe you’re correct. My rise is on the short side of “normal” but my waist is very short. I think the higher rises available now are a bit tricky for me, fit wise, as a result. But it can happen in lower rise pants too.

Anyway I wore those for a short while to check comfort, so I think I’m going to keep them.

I really like them in the last photo, where they are styled. Great striped shirt!

I purchased the lighter blue BR crops that is Angie's find. Love the fit and wash. Don't love the length as they are a little too short (on me) to be ankle grazing but too long to be culotte length (hope that makes sense!). At this length, between the higher waist and longer length it is a lot of jean and I feel like it overwhelms my frame. Maybe my eye needs to adjust?

I have the BR crops with the self belt that came out last fall and really like that length. I'm considering hacking these off to a similar length. My camera shy self may have to post pictures to get feedback...TBD.

I have trouble with high rises as well. I have to do a lot of try ons and some brands work better than others. For me, I often need one size for my waist and a size smaller for the hip/thigh. I'm relatively slim but I guess my waist is a size bigger than a fit model. Lower rises that hit at the hip area are so much easier for me but I don't like wearing them any more. ***sigh***

The thigh whiskering is not bugging me at least as you said so well--- they aren't tight in the thighs-but they give a nice-trendy (and flattering:-))) detail-I want it too!!!:-))

Greycat - there is some eye adjustment needed, to be sure. I live in nyc so I see new silhouettes pretty quickly after they emerge. Getting used to the on myself is the next step, if I like them. It will definitely help to have the right length.

Lyn-thank you! This styling sold me in them as well; I am not normally a full tuck gal either. They’re also a nice sturdy denim and a good buy for the price, I think. I will be comparing them to the dark wash pair I have on order but it doesn’t need to be one or the other.

These are fun Christina - I like them on you. And that blue top is a real stunner on you - the colour is really good.

I am wearing a pair of pants today that I like in the mirror but dislike in photos. The reason being they look as though they pull when actually they are a good fit...photos do not always tell the truth!! In saying that I like these in the photo.

I think I want red pants but they are a hard one. In my mind I find a good quality woolen tailored pair that fit perfectly. The ones I see at retail are polyester or stretch or denim, and are not at all what I have in my mind.

The pulling is a huge issue for me too The fit looks better to me in the pic with the striped top, there it just looks like whiskering.

Sal, that’s true about photos. Maybe the lighting in the Madewell store as sleds flattering. They should work on that, if so! I know what you mean on red pants. :/

I like the ones you've modeled here, Christina, and the fit does look good to me. They are especially cute with the full tuck. It's so disappointing not to find the wash you want in the style that works, though. Maybe you'll also find a darker pair that works. And I love the two pairs you showed that you already have--the white and the longer boot cuts. These lighter wash wide-legs would be a nice addition.
