Shopping for the shorts

I thought I'd look for some tops to wear with the shorts today. I didn't found any dark red ones, but the two things I bought for little money were good finds all the same.

#1/2 Tank for layering. Not so good on it's own, but the pattern and colors fit so well that I didn't hesitate.

#3 With denim jacket.

#4 The scarf I bought. It's perfect, I love the pattern and it's in my colors plus this yellow that goes so well with the shorts.

#5 With a real belt.

I'm wearing my Birkenstock sandals in the first four because the grey ballet flats I wore today caused blisters. Ouch! Not sure why, I wore them all the time last summer without a problem. And I still don't have any fab sandals... Do they look tolerable?

First I have to say that I LOVE that scarf! What a great pattern, and it really ties the black top and the shorts together nicely. Would it work with the first patterned top as well? I think it might. The birkies look cute for a casual look. Weird about the grey ballet flats. Has it been more humid lately?

Thanks Meredith! The pattern is just my thing. I guess I could do a wild pattern mixing with the first top. And you're right, it really was humid - maybe that's the reason.

Sometimes that's how it happens when shopping, isn't it? I love the new tank and scarf. Anything you love that much from the outset will no doubt be a workhorse for you. You're doing great styling the shorts and your Birks look fine to me. Ya gotta take care of the tootsies!

I love those prints, Astrid, and they go great with the shorts!
The birks are cute! On really hot, humid days the only shoes I can stand to wear are my Naots (of which I have several pairs) with the cork footbeds like Birks. My feet stick to everything else (even things that are normally fine) and get sweaty and blistery.

Everything looks fab here, that tank is such a great print! I think the little black flats you have in #5 would work perfectly with the outfit in #1-3, and you could also try your brown oxfords. I prefer the tucked and belted #5 to #4. I am really loving these shorts, Astrid!

You know I love the Birkies, don't you?! I had know idea they did such dainty sandals too, though!

And I'm loving them with the shorts, which are continuing to prove adorable. Both your cute printed tank and lovely scarf have me all agog with excitement. Those are *beautiful* prints, and perfect for the shorts as well as for you generally --- they're sure to work with lots more (like your gathered skirt?) too. And I was thinking what Meredith said too: pattern mixing potential!

And the softness of the shorts works fabulously with the rugged denim and fun printed tank --- that outfits my favourite out of all these! (and they all work just great, to me)

Thanks Diana! Interesting to hear that you have the same problem, the humid weather really seems to be the cause.

Thanks Aida! I agree, the blat flats would work with the other outfits too, but I fear that I would have the same problems in them in this weather. Same for the Oxfords. The last look with the tuck and the belt is definitely dressier than the rest.

Thanks Manidipa! Yes, I remember your great story about the Birks Sona sent you. The sandals are called "Bali", they have them every year. Unfortunately only in black or white. I hope they do a special edition someday with other colors. You're right, both of these pieces should work out with a lot of other things, I can't wait to play around with them! I agree that the denim jacket outfit is great, I think that's my favourite too.

I like your new pieces, they are keepers. With this elegant casual look, I prefer the ballet flats. Maybe it's a cliche, but I visualize Birks going with an intentional Boho look, like a long skirt, distressed jeans, fringe, etc. With your gorgeous hair, this would be a super cool look on you!

Re: blisters... I have sandals from last summer that gave me no blisters after the initial break in. Then this summer they started to give me, not exactly blisters, because I am quick to bandage up, but the beginnings of them. Now it depends on the day. Sometimes sore toes, sometimes not. I think blisters have something to do with the weather, heat, humidity, and your level of swelling that day.

Thanks Denise. I definitely like the ballet flats better, but I don't like to hurt my feet. I technically need new Birks too, because these are too small. I've seen the Balis in purple online, but never in the store. I'm not sure when and for whom these were produced. Different sandals that are comfortable would be great, but I have to confess that I've given up on finding a pair. I was in so many stores since March (!) and I didn't found anything. Maybe I would have been successful if I had bought some heels, but I don't want to. I can definitely see the Birks with distressed denim and I know what you mean, but I'm hesitant about pairing them with long skirts. Do you mean midis or maxis? That pairing really screams frumpy to my eye, I think it's hard to pull off. When I see stylish people wear them over here I always see a lot of bare leg or skinny jeans even.

I LOVE #5. Amazing outfit! These shorts need a visible belt with tucked in top to my eye. I also like the Birkies with the look

Have you tried the new tank and the scarf with other items in your closet to make sure that they're versatile? I would make sure that these new items play well with the rest of your closet, so you aren't just buying future orphans to try to make the old orphan work.

I may be the only one, but the shorts make me hesitate. They are about as warm of a tone as you can get, and it seems like it's going to take a lot of work to make them fit well with your cool, muted wardrobe. However, your pinterest also has a lot of warm tan and cognac colors in it, so maybe you've found a way to integrate this tone with your other cool toned outfits, or are working towards accomplishing this.

You say that the tank is "not so good on its own," and I'm not sure what that means. Obviously you'll need to be wearing some kind of bottoms with it but do you think it needs a layer over it to work? Will you be able to get enough use out of it over many seasons?

Kate, the scarf goes with a lot of my things, because all the colors besides the yellow are colors I often wear. No problem with that! The tank should work really well too. It's not that it looks bad on it's own per se, I just don't think it's the best look with these shorts. I think it best if I either have some volume on top or a sleeved garment to balance the proportions out. I can wear the tank with my other shorts (that aren't as voluminous) or my jeans and it would go well with two other skirts. I can also wear it under my cardigans in fall and winter, I do that with all my summer tops. I agree that the shorts are not the most versatile color, but it's true that I have a lot of tan/cognac in my Pinterest, it's something that appeals to me.
