Yes, waking up to that news was sobering. Australia is like Canada in that gun incidents on a mass scale are very rare indeed.

It is dreadful and so sad to see this happen. A dreadful day for Australia and the Jewish community there. There is a hero called Ahmed, who unarmed tackled one of the gunmen and disarmed him. The footage is quite extraordinary. He was injured by the other gunman in his shoulder and hand I believe.

So so tragic for all of Oz. Sending a spirit of loving kindness to all our Australian members and your compatriots.

And not to highjack this thread, but I join Jaime in asking you all to please also hold a thought for the Brown students. My beloved son and only child is a grad student there right now and was in his studio in the Engineering building with the other two members of his design team when the shooting started. The three got out safely. My heart is sobbing for the ones who didn't.

What a world we've made.

Thank you. I am ok. It’s absolutely horrifying. I am so sad and ashamed that this happened in my country and my city. This is not who we are. I am so sorry for those directly affected and for the devastating impact this has had on the Jewish community. I hope that they (and we as a country) can recover from it eventually.

Terrible situation. So glad you are OK Brooklyn. It has people worried in case something similar could happen here. We have some very good friends who are Jewish and they have had security at the synagogue for some time.

I was so saddened to see this. And how awful is it that I immediately thought it was “just another” mass shooting in the USA before I heard the location? That’s how common it has become here. We in the US have become increasingly desensitized to the madness.

Between this awful news, the Brown shooting, and the killing of Rob Reiner and his wife, the sadness in the world feels overwhelming right now. And those are just the tip of the iceberg. This week or so before Christmas always feels at least a little sad to me (anniversary of my father’s sudden death 34 years ago), and these events are not helping. I know I’m not alone in struggling a little with this time of year. I am sending hugs and wishes for peace to anyone who is having similar feelings.

It is very upsetting I agree Brooklyn. I felt the same when we had the Mosque attack in 2019, it is a huge shock. It is heartening to see the number of people that have donated blood and that the government (State and Regional) are taking sensible approaches.

The Brown University shooting is just dreadful too. I have to think of young people losing their life so needlessly and others being traumatised. And whilst I too have become somewhat desensitised to the frequent shooting events in the USA that is appalling in itself, because every one is too many.
