A significant number of designers are just changing colors and finishes on existing designs.
See SE Okala, Rag & Bone Newbury and Wyatt, Acne Pistol, Isabel Marant Bekett (the infamous wedge sneaker). Celine is redoing their slip on platform sneaker. Maison Martin Margiela peep-toe ankle boots. Valentino Rock Studs. Balenciaga has done multiple re-issues of the Ceintures.
Those are the examples off the top of my head.

So while perusing the Spring 2015 shoes. I'm seeing a lot of stuff that I've seen before.

Knee high gladiator sandals (mine are about five years old).
Platform, chunky heels (time to pull out my Miu Miu butterfly clogs).
The Derek Lam mules look interesting, but might be difficult to wear.
The pointy toe ankle straps look interesting...but don't seem to go with a lot of clothing offerings.
The comfortable shoes look the most interesting

The only ones that have really caught my eye at all are Marni pseudo sandal sneaker

Marni is know for doing interesting shoes.

Though honestly I'll think I'll just be in sneakers for the season. Maybe adding Adidas Stan Smith's, the original. Because even I can't stomach Isabel Marant's version with the matching price tag.

I agree that shoes seem to be moving on a slower cycle.

It seems like it's been at least a year since we started hearing that mules were back but I haven't seen anyone wearing them convincingly yet.

I also thought lace up boots might be a little bit of a trend, but the only ones I've really liked were YSL cat shoes and not really in my price range.

UmmLila - so true about the mules. I did see a very cool looking pair at Nine West recently, but the toe was so ridiculously sharp they were too tough to keep on while attempting to walk. Anyways - I felt this all winter too - nothing new in boots...everything looked the same as it did a year ago.

Ummlila, some trends stay fringe for a long time - like mules.

I think boots and booties have looked the same for a while, and those designers need to get cracking.

Yes, Angie. The current spate of boots, ankle boots and booties seem to be more retreads. See my reference to the Rag & Bone Newbury, I would also include the SE Petty's. Camilla Skovgaard is doing the same saw soled ankle boot as six years ago. Laurence Decade which popped all over street style pics and is the former designer for Chanel, she's just doing variations of her big hit.

It's like designers are still stinging from the recession and just doing their greatest hits.

Probably why I've shifted my focus to sneakers.

Agreed, Anna. I wonder why that is?

I'm focusing in loafers, which seem to work better for me than sneakers.

Thank you for this post! Great links. I just bought a pair of high (ok 2 inch) green pumps with a huge silver buckle and a sort of 70s heel. Yes, I am serious. Why? It was the most original (and extremely comfortable) shoe I saw. Picture attached.

One more thought before I have supper. Designers could be doing a great job of offering variety, but the buyers are being conservative and safe with their selections. Remember that the fashion buyers are the people who put the stuff into stores, and not the designers themselves unless the brands are the biggest and most well known (Chanel, Burberry, Prada - you know who I mean). And even then, not everything goes from catwalk to retail.

ETA, But Angie the slideshows I featured mostly showed runway pieces.

Though here in Seattle, I was at a spring fashion preview recently. One of the stylists even admitted that don't have the shoe styles I like. Even Barneys, my usual drool-fest has been lacking.

I'm going to hazard a guess that is right in the middle: if you have a solid moneymaker, like the Okala, why do something else? Tweak it a little, and milk that trend until it dies.

Yes the buyers make the choices that show up in retail. But it seems shoe buyers are more conservative than clothes buyers, where I see more variety
