Shoe Maintenance

Here's a question. With all the beautiful shoes I'm seeing around the forum lately, how do you ladies keep them nice and able to be worn from day to day? I think I might be really hard on shoes in general, and it makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong in my maintenance.

I polish my shoes and bags regularly. I also replace the heels before they are worn too far down.

I'm also hard on shoes. My local cobbler probably knows my shoe collection as well as I do. New heel tips, toe pieces and souls as needed and regular shoe maintenance at home (cleaning and polishing) with a rest day between wears if possible.

Also stiletto heels go much quicker then a chunkier heel. Likewise pointy toes suffer quicker then other toe shapes.

i really don't do anything special, but i do have a couple of general "rules". if possible, don't wear delicate shoes on bad weather days and/or wear indoor and outdoor shoes for such days. don't wear the same shoe two days in a row. when the heel or sole gets worn, take it to the cobbler and have him work his magic.

Take my shoes to the cobblers for polish and possibly repair at the end of eahc season before packing them.

I keep them in good repair with occasional visits to the cobbler when needed. I try my best to rotate the wears so I'm not wearing the same pair all the time. (I used to think I was extremely hard on shoes -- then I realized that trying to wear the same pair of shoes all season might be part of my problem.) I DO walk a TON (it is a rare day when I go under 5 miles) so I accept that I am going to wear through my shoes more quickly than most and budget for more footwear accordingly. And, like kkards, I fit the shoe to the day. I try not to wear delicate shoes on bad-weather days or days when I'll be walking a huge amount or on rough pavements. I actually avoid narrow heeled shoes for this reason -- I do have a few pairs for dressy occasions, but I find that chunky heels or wedges give me more comfort and longer wear.

I'm not a big polisher, and I don't do anything at the END of the season, but at the beginning of each season I review -- and that's when I make my trip to the cobbler. I bring him everything at once, for new heels, polishing, etc. I had a great pair of BR riding boots that I had for 10 years that he resoled twice. A good cobbler is a must.
