I'm on a hunt for a good shirtdress or two, and am hoping all of you lovely people can help point me in the right direction.

Here are my qualifications:
- long enough to be worn without leggings (I'm 5'3", so I can order a tall if necessary to give me the needed length)
- less than $50, ideally in the $25-$35 range
- in a warm and muted color, think "autumn" colors or the palette Jean (aka Greengloves) wears so fabulously
- not in a lime green color, because the shirtdress I already have is lime/yellow green
- the collar isn't too huge because my neck is on the short side

So far the best I can find are:

Kate: try H&M. I'm pretty sure they have exactly what you're looking for.

Unfortunately there is no H&M in Tucson It's looking more and more like I'll just have to make the 2 hour drive to Phoenix to go to the NAS and stop at an H&M while I'm up there.

I was trying to see if I could find the shirtdresses online in the Dutch H&M website, I found one, but the store in Boston had many more.

I had a similar one I bought there a while back that was nice...until I tried to alter it myself and ended up destroying it! Ooops.

That H&M dress is adorable! I think it would be worth the drive!

Is that H&M in Scottsdale open yet? DH and I were at the mall there for the first time in years and I was so excited to see the H&M store, until I realized it hadn't opened yet.

ooo crazyone, I really like that one! Now I just have to convince my boyfriend I'm not crazy taking the car for a day to drive to Phoenix to go shopping...

Natalie, I looked into it and the Scottsdale store opened in November 2009. They are building an H&M in Tucson (YAY!) which will open "fall 2010" and are building a second store in Scottsdale too.

Hee hee, I was just checking it out too! I didn't realize there were TWO locations in Scottsdale, the one that's already open, and the other one that I visited that's going to open soon! Argh!

I've never been, but I keep hearing so much about it. It sounds worth the trip.

I had my eye on the Boden one before it went on sale, and now they're out of my size. sigh...

Thanks Katja and Natalie, but I've decided not to buy any more black tops and dresses. Those are both very cute though!

It's on mega sale, and though there's only one size left online, if there are any Ann Taylor stores near you, there may still be some in stock.

Have you thought about a denim shirtdress? I wanted to get something a little more casual and recently purchased a very cute trench style sleeveless style one at Nordstrom. I can't find it on the site but it's Tahari by Arthur Levine. It should be good for layering and it's very flattering. I'm 5 3" 1/2 and the length is perfect.

I got an email this morning that all sale items are an extra 50% off and there's an attached coupon for 40% off your entire order in stores. I'm not certain that you can combine the deals, but it's worth looking into. Especially if this dress fits your needs.

Frances, I like it, but I'm actually looking for something with sleeves (though I'm not too picky about the length). I probably should have mentioned that in my original post.

julijuli, I've been leaning away from denim (though not entirely ruling it out) because I want something more business casual for grad classes and teaching.

They seem to only be available in petite, so they might be too short for what you're looking for.

They're very hard to find on Target's website because it's so crummy. I don't understand why they don't let you easily search for the other colors an item comes in?

I'm afraid that red isn't "warm" enough, but the limited dress is worth looking into - I'll stop by the local store ASAP and see if they have it! Thanks!

Esprit has really cheap shipping (1.50 an item for stuff from the outlet if you buy at least $30 worth of stuff) and free returns, so it's totally worth ordering something and trying it out...

Just saw some really cute cotton woven ones at Target. I believe they were the Merona label. I was going to try one on but was in a time crunch--might go back.

So, I went to Target - everything I could find had cap sleeves, but I tried them anyway, and as I suspected they looked awful

I also went to Banana Republic and tried the dress from my original post. It fit ok, but the store only had the petite sizes which were too short, and it looks more casual than I want. So pass on that too.

No luck at AT or the Loft either.

Crazyone, the Esprit link just takes me to their homepage. Is it still available?

I might just order the ON online only one (in tall, because it runs REALLY short) and keep my fingers crossed. Or postpone my search - I feel like once I give up the perfect one will appear! Or maybe there will be one at the NAS...
