Shiny silver bag+shiny silver sneakers=me very uncomfortable

One of my very first posts on this forum last year asked if anyone knew where I could purchase this silver Rebecca Minkoff backpack which I had seen in a magazine and nowhere else. Well, apparently even though it was in a July 2016 magazine, it was a Spring 2017 item. I finally got it on sale this summer. And love it.

Meanwhile, after equivocating for probably two years over metallic fashion sneakers, I finally just bought these ECCOs. I like them fine and they're comfy, though they probably make my feet look a little big. However, I've worn the bag and the shoes together twice and I dunno. I felt uncomfortable. Too matchy matchy? Too over the top? Too maximal? Any opinions?

I wish I could be of help but for my tastes, I think they are a snazzy duo!
Maybe with more wear your comfort level with adapt?

I bet you'll adjust to it. It always takes me a little while. Something can feel very outré on me, and yet no one else would ever see it that way. I'd ease into it by using one at a time, but I don't think there's anything wrong with using them together.

It took me a while to become comfortable wearing metallics. I think if you give it a few more attempts you will ease into it and come to love it.

I think they look great together. In fact, although I have several pairs shiny silver shoes, I don't have a shiny silver bag, so I'm a little envious.

I added my first pair of metallic shoes (silver mary-janes) earlier this year, and yes, it was uncomfortable the first few times going out in something so "blingy" when I'm not a blingy person to begin with. I agree with others -- it's completely a mental hurdle.

Visually, your bag-shoe combo looks great. Maybe sticking to an all-neutral outfit will help? Pairing them with grey and denim (just as an example) might quiet the silver down and make it less shouty. Like JAileen, I'm kind of wishing I had a matchy silver bag now...

And yeah, this makes me want more silver. My toenails have been shiny silver recently, and I was eyeing a pair of silver Toms sneakers. My new purse is black but I was sad that they no longer make it in silver.

Both the shoes and the bag are great - but I might not be inclined to wear them together either. Depends on the rest of the outfit though . I have a couple of pair of metallic sneakers in that colour, and although I wear both of them a lot, I never match them with a metallic bag . A bit too country-club looking for my personal taste. I'd repeat the metallic in a statement earring or cuff in the same coloured leather when wearing the shoes.

I can totally understand being uncomfortable wearing them together, but they *do* look great, and would look great together. I like La Pedestrienne's idea of toning them down with something neutral like grey and denim.

Thanks, all! I do think that to get comfortable with wearing both together, I need to make the rest of the outfit completely neutral. Yesterday I wore them with a black sweater and medium blue jeans, but the jeans have a bit of a patchwork treatment that make them very maximal for me. Perhaps if I wore all black or black sweater/plain dark blue jeans or, as suggested, gray sweater/plain jeans, I would feel less out of my depth.

Lisa P, can I ask what "too country club" means to you? I think it has something to do with what I'm calling too matchy matchy, but I need to clarify for myself what it is that bothers me about that.

That was kind of rude of me, wasn't it? I think I'm allowed to snark at the country club look because I lived it for half my life - lol. I think better words would be too deliberately matched for being pieces of equal weight in an outfit. Which is why I thought a smaller nod to a matching metallic (in an earring or cuff or neckpiece) might be better. As fun as metallic is , and I'm all over it too, it can sometimes read retirement Palm Beach (there I go with country clubbing again) .....

I probably would not wear them at the same time although I might like it if someone else did. Super nice choices though, the style balances the metallic and vice versa.

Your worry that the shoes make your feet look big reminds me of how I feel every time I get new Birkenstocks, there's just something about new "comfort" shoes that makes them look huge until you've worn them and they start to conform to your feet.

They look so great together in the picture, and I imagine they look great together on, too. I have some metallic footwear and a metallic bag, and I don't wear mine together, but then mine don't match! So I think it may just take a little getting used to. I can relate to thinking one's feet look big in a certain color of shoe--for me it's white. I can't seem to get past that big-foot feeling when I try on white footwear. It's in our heads, though, I'm pretty sure, not in the heads of those looking at us.

I think I would be okay to wear together because I kind of think the bag would be on my back and if I wore a low contrast top (white or grey) it wouldn't be too shouty. I also think it's a matter of getting used to the look of the shoes looking down. Nice choices!

I think it's not just avoiding Marcy, but just achieving balance. It's not about following random rules but seeing if they compete for attention in a way that diminishes the benefits. Some bag- shoe " matchup- matchy" is against the " rules" of, oh don't ever wear a matched set" but might in fact pull an outfit together, so we shouldn't follow blindly. It would just depend on the items. Maximal is " in" but it might work better to have one metallic plus some pattern or something else.

I think it's a matter of personal taste and style whether to wear them together. A couple of years ago, I might have worn them together, but that feels a little too matchy-matchy for me now. But emphasizing *for me*. If it feels right to you, wear it! I think it's one of those things you need to try wearing a couple of times to evaluate.

If you have the Magpie Gene, the combination is a comfortable one. If not, stick to one shiny item at a time.

I must have the Magpie Gene because I love the look of the shoes with the bag. I rarely find things that coordinate so perfectly.

I too love the way they look in the photo. I know what you mean about wearing shiny metallics (I usually wear slightly distressed/muted metallics) but I think both the backpack and the sneakers would look great individually or together.
