Rachylou -- I was also delighted by the high-tech aspect of the show! The superimposed text could be gimmicky, but it doesn't feel it. Love the nicotine patches instead of a pipe. And I have a crush on Martin Freeman too.
Bionda -- I read all the Sherlock Holmes mysteries too as a teenager, and was a big fan of the Jeremy Brett television version. I remember looking forward to Sunday nights, when I'd watch it with my mom and dad. But this new version is equally good, just different.
DeclawedJaguar -- re. Cumberbatch's voice -- isn't it though? So wonderfully deep and resonant.
I don't see Freeman's Watson as particularly gullible. He seems intelligent, in the ordinary sort of way, but emotionally damaged. But what's interesting is that he's the only person who seems not only impressed with Sherlock's abilities -- because clearly Lestrade and others are too -- but also seems to accept him for who he is as a person. I mean, it's clear that he's irritated by Sherlock's arrogance and hilariously insensitive comments, but he's able to overlook all that because of his genuine admiration for the man's genius. And Sherlock kind of blossoms under this appreciation. This is a guy who's so out of touch with his feelings that he thinks he doesn't have any, or at least can detach himself, and in a very short time he forms a real, deep bond with Watson. And in return, he gives Watson a sense of direction and purpose, and a fullness to his life that he was lacking. That's why it's such a compelling story. And it's not even a romantic one! I can't remember the last time I've felt so invested in an on-screen relationship, and then here comes a totally platonic one, and it's more touching than any love story I've seen.
Lyn, Diana, MaryK -- yay! Glad to know you're fans. Mary, I've never heard of Elementary. I must look it up.
ETA Una, we cross-posted. Glad you love it too! But wait, what? They have subtitles? That's hilarious. We don't get them here. I do see why non-English people have trouble, though -- but husband does a bit. I've got the advantage of having a very English mother.
