Sheath dresses

I don't own any! Where is a good place to shop for them? I don't like buying things like this on-line - would prefer to do it in person. I live in a moderate climate and have been wanting to try the layering technique that so many of you do so beautifully! I would like to get just a basic dress that I can dress up or down. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Ann Taylor, Talbots and JCrew is where I like the quality of sheath dresses. I got two cheaper options at Target recently and I'm **very** happy with them.

I had the perfect LBD for layering. Unfortunately (?), it no longer fits. I ended up stumbling on a dress that I bought for a specific purpose that I have layered in many ways. It's not a solid (or expensive, or even a solid color for that matter) and I found it at JCP. And yhet, it's not 'the dress.' Are you looking for an LBD (or the equivelant in another neutral) or something more bold? Are you thinking a sheath or something in an a-line? High neck, scoop neck, v-neck? I am still looking for the perfect LBD but continue to ask myself questions about what it is I really want. I am looking everywhere to find 'the dress.' I continue to get a better picture in my head of what I am looking for but haven't found the perfect dress yet. I think continuing to narrow my search and, scouring many stores will eventually lead me to that wardrobe staple that is the perfect layering dress.

I have a horrible time with sheath dresses because of my ginormous bosom. I tried on three at Target that I just loved but didn't fit. Any hints about sheath dresses that accommodate the well-endowed among us?

I don't own any dresses - except for semi-formal/formal occassions type - so I'm starting from scratch. I know that I don't like a-lines on me, so I think I'm looking for a sheath - basic - have no idea about the neckline - what is the most versatile? I think I should start with something sleeveless because of where I live (mild weather.) Open to a print, as long as it can be worn with several different colors or styled in several different ways!

I'd like to second Ann Taylor--I find their sizing is pretty consistent, too, and I can often pick up their dresses at consignment shops/e-bay etc. at very reasonable prices (and I'm always confident that a size 2 will fit me well). Talbots' is nice quality but I find them to be cut a bit sackily (then again, I am not at all busty, so perhaps it's just that I don't fill them out well).

I'm a huge believer in the sheath--I can't wait to see what stylish you comes up with!

I keep running across Calvin Klein sheath dresses at Marshall's and TJMaxx stores. It seems like each season CK puts a variety of different ones at these stores - some better than others for fit, fabric, color, etc. I think most of them are specifically made for these stores.

It might be worth a look to check out if Calvin Klein works for you. . .

For neckline, I like when they have the high round neckline. Easy to put almost any top layer over it with no bulk or conflict, easy to add a scarf or statement necklace.

Oh, one more thought--if you have a Macy's or a Bloomie's nearby, I also like I.N.C.'s dresses, in terms of quality and consistency. Often their pieces have a bit of stretch, which can be very helpful.

Loft has some nice dresses at the moment, too. I saw some sheaths online at NY & Co. Their quality is hit and miss, but my favorite summer dress came from there and it is nice.

Sheath dresses - love them! I've had luck with Talbots and Calvin Klein for sheaths. Macy's always seems to have a good selection. Good luck with your search and keep us posted!
