Somehow moms can get confused and think they are being critical of themselves when they are really being critical of their children. There's also that weird thing where some people think it's not an insult if they say it about their own body too.

I'm sorry that she thought this was an okay thing to say to you. My own mom can be quite dense as well...and I hate to admit, I've heard some pretty dreadful things come out of my own mouth to my oldest daughter who looks exactly like me. I think I've gotten much better, but it took a conscious effort. We're just so accustomed to criticizing ourselves that it's just a natural (unhealthy!) extension to take it right to the kids too.

As a daughter and a mother, we can't help it. We mean to be helpful and realistic.

My grandmother was painfully honest, her name was Doreen and when my mum gets too 'truthful', we always say 'Oh, thank you Doreen'

Then my mum knows she has gone too far, we usually laugh afterwards

Ouch. You're making me want to post my own mom rant. Also, you can't win either way. I made a conscious choice not to put my daughter on a diet or give her any flack about her weight (she went through a slightly chubby phase at 12 or so--who didn't?--and is now thin). Recently she was complaining to me about how I should have made her go on a diet, how could I have let her look like that, etc etc.

I'm sorry Rosie. My grandmother does the same thing. She likes to remind me that I need to lose weight or my BF of 3 years will leave me and not one else will have me. She started saying that to me in high school when I was about 5'6 and 115 lbs. She also likes to point out my butt and hips and state that I need to watch the size of those parts.

Oh Moms. I have a number of choice quotes from mine, as well. I can only hope I don't do this to my own wonderful child, but if I don't do that, I'm quite sure I'll do something else. C'est la vie.
