These are another 2 of my handed down items that I thought I'd better get your opinions on before winter is over here in Australia

I do realise that is hard to see black things...

Pics 1 to 2 is a sleeveless tunic sweater (I am wearing over a black long sleeve tee and leggings) I mostly like this but am not sure about how the shoulder line looks

Pics3/4 are a dress that I quite like but am a bit worried that it is dated.If I keep I will take in a bit at the back as roughly shown by my hand in pic 4.

Is #1 a dress? If so, I say pass. Too short even with tights and boots, as I think you have here, and ... not really you. The other one is a dress? A skirt? Not bad, great shape and looks like a good fit. My main concern on that is the dark (gloomy?) color. I’ve really liked your lighter choices lately, such as ice blue.

I think the second item is amazing and would steal it from you in a heartbeat. I agree that the first one is in that awkward length between tunic and dress.

I like the second dress a lot, lovely shape, interesting design. The first dress might be difficult to style - a difficult length.

cjh - the first one is a sleeveless sweater The second one is a dress. I agree that my own choices are strongly heading towards lighter colours at the moment (though I did buy one black and white dress that has had lots of compliments)

Maybe try the first one with a pair of pants? Slim cropped perhaps?

I think the first one has potential but you may have to work to style is satisfactorily. That may or may not decrease its utility for you.

The second one is FAB. Even if you are moving away from those colors, you may regret passing it on. It's unique and looks great on you.

I'd pass on #1. Too short and fitted on the bottom half.

I LOVE the second dress with the alteration in #4.

I love 2 and think it looks modern. I just discarded a sleeveless sweater like 1 - it had become loungewear - and I stopped feeling fab in it. It was comfy though with leggings and a long sleeve tee but it annoyed me to have three layers on the waist .

#1 reminds me of the 80s. #2 is a keeper, its interesting and you look fab in it

I agree with the others. The second one suits you but the first looks like it belongs to someone else, a tall angular person with blunt or asymmetric dark hair (ive been guiltyof shopping for that woman too)! The blue square shape competes with your softer features.

Yes, I'm with suntiger. Something about the first outfit says Star Trek.

I love the second dress. I would be tempted to slim the arms too but depends on how they feel.

I was thinking along the same lines as Liz A. about the first one - “not that there’s anything wrong with that”

Something about the block of blue color in the first outfit was bothering me, and I think SUNTIGER nailed it—it competes with your softer features.

I love the second outfit and vote keep, unless you’re tired of it.

I think you would look fabulous in a short dress over leggings, but I agree that #1 is a pass. I really like #2 -- an arty item like this doesn't really date, as long as it fits well and suits your style!

Thanks all so much for your input and sorry I've taken a while to get back to you - stealing a moment here away from the grind of helping with year 5 projects which are just constant at the moment "Mum, how do I say "high resolution" in another way. Me- I can't think of any way...") Anyway...

I love both Liz's "Star Trek" reference - I actually think that might have been what was bothering me at the back of my mind and Suntiger's "a tall angular person with blunt or asymmetric dark hair"

So it will go. That's fine.

Glad for all the love for dress 2. I'll try to take it in fairly soon so I can wear it while the weather is still cold. I'll probably wear it with (fake) pearls so I can counteract the darkness around my face - that's pretty much my go to at the moment when I wear dark stuff.

I guess I’m an outlier too. As a tunic, I think 1 is just fine. And 2 is amazing, esp. with pearls!

I like the blue framing your face. If you wanted to lighten it up more, you could wear it with leggings with that blue in the pattern. But then I’m generally not on board with the idea of finding one look that is you and out with the rest.

I agree with the rest about the dress. I’d probably play up the “school marm” charm with ankle boots with buttons.

Dress #2 is lovely on you! You are clever being able to do alterations. With the weather we have been having, it feels like you will be able to wear the dress for a few months to come. BRRR it's cold!

Fashiontern I hear you on not having just one style. The second dress is quite a departure from my normal style I think, but I still like it. I liked it on the previous wearer when she was still wearing it. But it is a challenge for me when I am handed down nags clothes to work out which of them do suit me. I like the ankle boot idea (though my don't have buttons)

Bijou - yes spring seem quite a way off in this rainiest winter for 15 years! I'll try and put some darts in tomorrow. I'm not that clever with alterations, but since I didn't pay for the dress it's no loss if I muck it up! I have entrusted items I'm more concerned about to someone else especially when the fabric is delicate or slippery, which this one isn't . Incidentally it ironed really beautifully.

Even though both items are very dark, the lines of the dress suit you so much better and you look very pretty and at ease in it.
