I've been inspired by forum member Janet's shag haircut, which is super flattering on her and suits her style so well. One of my favorite haircuts of all time was a shag, too, a shorter one than Janet's. But when I moved away from the stylist that cut it in the 1990s, I wasn't happy with other stylists' attempts at it, so I have been leery to return to the style.

I took the plunge this week, and I am super happy with the result. These pics are not the greatest, but I just had to show it to you all anyway! Thanks, Janet and Angie, for the encouragement! I can see myself sticking with a version of this style for a while.

Joyce, I've read that it can suit any type of hair. I would think there are ways to layer thinner hair to give it a fuller appearance or more texture. But I don't really know!

Fab! I remember these as a child in the 70s. We called it a 'shaggy dog' cut, although it was longer in the neck. I had super long hair with no layers and was dying for one.

I had a shag back in 6th grade and I think it was my favorite cut ever. I have considered it recently but am nervous about how it would work with my wavy hair - thanks for the inspo!

Yay! It looks great, Sharan! The length makes it almost like a shag-bob hybrid.

Joyce, I think a well-done shag cut can work well for a variety of hair types. My hair was thick when I was younger and curlier than it is now, and these kinds of layered cuts worked really well to make my hair more manageable. Now that my hair is less voluminous, the layers can help give it body and movement.

Thanks, Kyle. The shag haircut I loved in the 90s was razor cut, and I've had a few other stylists since then who would use a razor on my hair. My waves respond well to it, with fewer odd pieces flipping out. This is a razor cut. My current stylist (for the past maybe 10 years!) gets my hair. She uses a razor for the layered cuts and scissors where she wants a more precise line--at times she'll use both methods in the same haircut. And I like Jayne Matthews' work very much.

Thanks Janet, and thanks again for the encouragement. I agree this is more like a shaggy bob. It's close to what I had in the 90s. I was in the Army then and had to wear my hair above the bottom edge of my collar in uniform.

It’s because of Jayne Matthews that I learned how to razor cut my hair during the pandemic and have lengthened the time I can go in between professional hair cuts! She’s great!

Sharan, I hope to post pictures soon. My stylist used a razor and scissors. I have straight, fine hair, and it turned out great. My hair is not thin but medium.

I like it! I might get a shag too. I would rather go along with the waviness in my hair. It doesn't work when someone gives me a style that is supposed to be straight, because in 24 hours it will be back to doing what it does, or it will be flattened by a hat, or both. I haven't the motivation or the patience to fight my hair.
