Sewing Patterns

Does anyone here sew their own clothes? I have a daughter who is brilliant and wishes to sew her own dress for brother's wedding. I was told that there are fantastic pattern options online these days. Does anyone know anything about this? I think that she is looking for a fit and flare pattern, something like this: DRESS. She is familiar with working with knits. Thank you for any insights!

The link to the dress didn't work for me. There is a helpful online resource that your daughter might enjoy and find useful: Patternreview.com

It is primarily a community where sewists can share reviews of patterns that they have used. You can also buy patterns from the site, find reviews of other sewing-related supplies (beyond patterns), and take online classes. I pay the annual membership fee, which I think is 30 USD but I think you can access a lot of the offerings without becoming a member.

I have always had good luck with the basic Simplicity, Butterick, Mcalls and Vogue. Also, Etsy has many. Pinterest is also a good resource to find more independent pattern makers.

A website called The Fold Line lets you search for patterns based on their design features, and they carry patterns from many different companies. For example if your daughter wants a fit and flare knit dress, here are over 50 options

Thank you so much! I wish I could sew, so i want to help my daughter. My mom was a fabulous seamstress and I was so lucky because I’m tall and it was difficult for me to find clothes. This is a photo of a dress my daughter made for me a couple of years ago. I really like this dress and style of it. I would like a different neck on it, but that’s ok. I just wore it to a wedding actually. I love dresses I can accessorize with black shoes because I have such a difficult time finding them.

I will share all of your great advice!

Thanks for the information, everyone. I forwarded the links to a friend who just bought herself a sewing machine, and she is looking for patterns. She sewed as a kid, and her mother made all her clothes.

Marija, that's a lovely dress your daughter made for you, she could change the neckline for you to what you prefer.
Olive Green, how nice of you to send the information to your friend. If she needs a refresher for sewing she can follow Mimi G Style, she is wonderful and provides lots of free sew alongs on YouTube, she might already know about her.

Wow, that dress is great! She chose the layout of the fabric pattern so well. I used to sew a lot of my own clothes, but only used store bought patterns back then. She might look on Reddit, they have many sewing groups and they're very friendly and helpful. (I still browse them for fun)

My daughter has also recently gotten interested in sewing her own clothes. I think she has been finding cute patterns online. Your dress turned out great - she fit it perfectly.
