Seeking simple suggestions for toddler bday

Hello ylf,

My daughter will turn 4 this week. How time flies.

This year we didn't rent a party room (common here) so I am looking for simple ideas on how to make her feel special on her bday.

My thoughts and ideas so far:
Breakfast in bed (a la Peppa Pig episode she saw recently haha)
Wear her princess costume all day
Family will come for cake after work

She will get a few presents but I am looking for things we can do or activities to make her feel special.

Car is in the shop so ideally suggestions would be things we can do at home.

Eta I have been on Pinterest and found ideas by searching birthday traditions but I would still love to hear your ideas!

In my family we have a tradition that the birthday person gets to choose the meals for the whole day. I don't know if a 4 year old is up to that, but mine love it (birthdays are months away and they are already giving me suggestions).

I also tell them the story of their birth. As kids we used to call it our "born story".

My kids get to pick out what we have for dinner and also what type of cake or other dessert they want their birthday. They also like to look at their baby photo albums.

Does she like to do arts and crafts? Maybe start a tradition of making a special birthday craft? Maybe a fancy hairdo and painted nails to go with her princess dress?

This year my Miss 7 and miss 3 wanted to decorate their own birthday cakes. They were very proud! If she likes blowing out the candles, you could do it several times in the day. I think my kids also love the chance to have a good play with their birthday toys. Have a very happy day

• We've done birthday person chooses the meal(s), and how the cake will be.
• We have a You Are Special plate that they can use on their special day (and other random days, but not too much so it stays special).
• I have friends who wake them up at 6 a.m. (or whatever, early) with a loud song on the stereo and singing.

We like to get the birthday kid balloons, usually 3, and take birthday photos. We talk about what they were like as a baby and show them their baby pictures. Birthday kiddo picks a favorite dinner and cake that I make (this year, pizza and cheesecake, lucky me! ) we keep it low key as far as presents go. We got kiwi crate this year so that we have fun projects to do all year!

We used to get to pick dinner and then we'd have cake and ice cream. We used to get to pick those, too. With a summer birthday, what about a trip to the park? We used to go sledding on mine.

My DD likes to wear a special outfit - I usually buy her a Birthday shirt. It would be great to have her wake up to balloons in her bedroom. How about a treasure hunt? Or give her a tiny present for each of her 4 years.

When mine were that age I did a treasure hunt of sorts for them to find their gift. They loved it and still want it today at ages 18, 16 and 14.
I started with a poem which in our case must rhyme and be silly. Then clues with the poem having the first clue. The final clue leads you to the gift. When they were 4 I used the poem and 4 clues.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I apologize I cannot reply to each person individually - back to school + bday planning + car woes are taking a toll on me. Just know you all were really helpful and I am going to do some of the ideas mentioned here. Thanks again!
