I wear a small in the J. Crew shirts, and I am 5'1, generally wear a size four, and wear a 32DD/DDD bra. I do like my tee-shirts to fit me snugly. I am not broad-shouldered. You might find that the v-neck is wide if you are narrow in the shoulder--I actually like the width of the v--even though it is wide, it doesn't dip very low. If you have a J. Crew store nearby, this is an item that they always seem to carry in the store.
I have attached two photos of me in one of the shirts, to give you an idea. I apologize for the weird poses and for the shirt being a little askew in the orange tee-shirt--I was halfway through making a couple of necklaces and was taking photos of my progress to figure out the best way to proceed.
