Seeking a Tuxedo jacket: is this the one?

I'm looking for a versatile tuxedo jacket that will work as a topper for dresses/ skirts and over pants. I'm hoping that this will be an item that ups my style, helps me stay warm (I freeze in air-conditioning)*, and will work with many items in my closet.

1. Should I be thinking of two jackets, one as a topper for dresses and skirts and one for wearing with pants?

2. If so, what are the guidelines for where the jacket hits the hip? For pants? And for skirts and dresses?

3. I found this cute jacket - it's pricey, but it is on sale. What do you all think of this?

I have a tuxedo jacket from Target a few seasons ago and love it! I wear mine with both pants and dresses and find it works fine. It looks to me like the length of the one you posted should be versatile. You never know until you try it. Are you able to order and return to the store if it doesn't work out?

QM - Thanks for the input. I'm feeling tempted to take the risk. I think I can return if it does not wrok out...I looked to see if any of the stores in my neighborhood had availability, so I could try it on in-store, but none do. I'm awful about returning things, and end up either wearing things that fit poorly or not wearing them. I really need to be better about this, though, to reach my goal of a carefully edited closet that only contains clothes that I love and wear.

Looks like it has great potential, but unfortunately you probably can't tell unless you try - in at least two sizes. . .

If you do, then you MUST return anything and everything you don't like!!!!! Right?

And these can easily be returned to a Macy's store. Do you have one close by? I like to carry rejects out to my car immediately and they drive around with me for a few days. I can always make time to run in and return something during a week. . .

I do the same as Sara, order two or more sizes and then stick them in the car to return when I get a chance. I think the jacket can be very versatile and work with pants or dresses.

I think this might fit all the requirements - a great find. It might be worth taking the plunge and trying it.

Sal linked to this jacket on Already Pretty. It is cute and I just wish the model wasn't standing iin such a hunched-over way. I love a well-cut black jacket. In fact, I was about to post about my love for my Theory blazer. Try it out!

Ok, I think I will take the plunge and purchase this jacket as soon as I gone through my closet and done some purging (I'm on a carrot and stick model of closet editing). Thanks for the input, ladies.

Una - I too wish the model was not standing hunched over; it's hard to get a feel for what the jacket might look like when I wear it since I don't usually hunch over like that all the time. Also, can you share a link to the Theory blazer? Thanks!

RChick -- I was in an H&M yesterday and they had a cropped tuxedo jacket with shirred sleeves that I just loved. It would be perfect with dresses (okay, "will be" perfect with dresses, since it came home with me) and it was very inexpensive, about $35.

Do you have an H&M nearby?

ETA: For skirts and dresses, go shorter in the jacket.

I think you linked to the tuxedo jacket that I tried on at Macy's and it was not nearly as cropped on me as on the model. I'm petite and small-busted but usually wear regular sizes. It did seem well made. I came close to buying it and probably would have of it had been on sale then.

April - I do have an H&M, but I have usually had such bad luck with fit at H&M that I just have not thought to try it out. Based on what you are saying, though, a visit might be in order. Let me know how your tuxedo ends up working for you, though..

Joy - I'm tall-ish (5'8) and, for my narrow frame, big-busted, so the length *might* work out. I have not yet taken the plunge, as I'm waiting for some other things that I ordered to arrive. If that order pans out, though, the tux might have to wait a few more months.
