Just checking in our Seattle ladies! Just heard this on the news. Trust you are all safe. According to reports this bridge was a major transit corridor between Seattle and Vancouver?
I've been over that bridge hundreds of times since that is the route I take to get from the Seattle area to my homeland to see the family. Its a shock to think how fragile that bridge was all this time. I'm happy that no-one was killed in the accident since it could have been so much worse. Scary....
There were injuries but it is a miracle no one died. An oversize truck hit a girder. It is far north of Seattle. But over 70,000 vehicles traverse that bridge every day.
Our entire infrastructure is in a shambles - I won't get into politics, but if we want to feel safe as a nation, more money should go into fixing our ancients bridges and tunnels and airports instead of the so-called defense budget.
It's seriously nothing short of a miracle that only two cars fell into the water and only three people were injured. Luckily this happened just long enough after rush hour that there weren't more cars involved. My BIL travels this bridge from Bellingham into Seattle almost every day. So scary to think what could have happened. Even more scary? The state secretary of transportation said there were a number of bridges along Interstate 5 in Washington state that were rated lower than the bridge that collapsed. We travel over bridges over water regularly around here - its just a daily part of life. Yikes. And the affect this will have on commuters and commerce? It's going to be huge.
Glad all are safe and it is a miracle that so few vehicles went into the water. I just read that this bridge had multiple repairs last year so likely its infrastructure was not where it needed to be.
Thanks for the concern, Elle, Debs and Zap. It's a MIRACLE no one was badly hurt. We are surrounded by water in Seattle, and there are bridges everywhere. It's part of life around here even on very short commutes within the city sprawl. Scary stuff.
What's scariest is, according to inspection/ratings, this was far from being the worst bridge in the state. There are many that are in known disrepair.
