It occurred to me that I might be able to wear all sorts of “seasonally confused” wardrobe items in winter here. I’m looking forward to lots of dresses and boots with bare legs, toppers that don’t fit under coats...and I’m even tempted by this “impractical” sweater.

Anyone seen any nonsensical combos that just might work in a Southern California winter?

Angie - my son's preferred look is a puffer with shorts and Adidas slides. He might wear socks as well. This is why I get most of the fashion budget....

But jokes aside, I think you are right Jenn. Maybe short sleeve jumpers.... Definitely perforated booties would work too.

I wear short sleeve sweaters and sleeveless and short sleeve dresses with boots and bare legs ALL THE TIME. Sydney and LA have a lot in common weather wise.

There are people here who wear shorts and T-shirts (and no topper) all through winter. I draw the line at that.

You are the ideal candidate for sleeveless cashmere tops, and hoodies with shorts. I have seen middle school kids ( about 12-14 years old) wear shorts to school in a snowstorm. Their teachers think they are too poor to buy coats but I they choose not to wear them. No matter how much or fast you grow, you can wear shorts even if pants get too short.

Australian winters are likely to be similar to Californian ones - we are very happy to be seasonally confused - sleeveless dresses, jackets with bracelet sleeves and knits with cute cut out detailing - it all works for us without having to worry about freezing.

Ha! I loved flip flops and puffers when I lived in CA. I also wore a wool pea coat in July, but San Francisco July is cold!

Yes- sleeveless velvet tops and dresses! And openwork sweaters, and open toe booties, and thin long sleeved dresses, etc....

Yes!! Knock yourself out!! And that is a gorgeous sweater!!

And yes to all of the above. I love the look of (knee-high) boots with bare legs and dresses, all kinds of perforated booties and footwear, gilets, maxi cardigans over everything without the need to cover up with a coat etc.

dressing in fall/winter in so cal is not easy. Depends on your lifestyle ansd what hours of the day you are outdoors. I have a separate wardrobe for evenings, The 20 degree difference between daytime and evening make it difficult to just dress for the day.

Vogue Teen recently posted about very seasonally confused pants/shorts that could only work in LA. They have just one trouser leg; the wearer’s other leg is bare. I suppose it’s only a small step from some extreme distressing.

The oddest thing I remember from California, where I grew up, is that for the rain people switched to cloth sneakers. Ugh. Wet shoes all day. And this was before gear, so people I knew had no raincoats and used no umbrellas, either.

Thanks for the all the great suggestions. Sleeveless cashmere and velvet! Perforated booties! Bracelet sleeves! I might actually be looking forward to the long, snowless winter now.

suntiger, I'll definitely be looking for openwork knits. I love them, and their seasonality was limited where I lived in Colorado.

Sal, Joy, and JenniNZ, I have always thought that Colorado and NZ have a lot of lifestyle commonalities. The shorts-in-winter look is pretty ubiquitous there too. Sal, my son had a uniform of track pants, t-shirt, and puffer vest straight up until he was around 15 or 16, and then something clicked, and now he carefully makes outfits and accessorizes. It's pretty funny.

Boots in the heat are very common here as patience wears thin after a while. But people are quite wimpy about the cold and everyone bundles up once it gets much below 80F .

I’m in Texas, not SoCal, but I definitely enjoy wearing perforated or open toed booties, skirts with bare legs and cropped pants in fall and winter.

Honestly, I still bundle up almost as much as I did in the Midwest in winter. The difference is that once I bundle up, I’m no longer cold. Shevia, below 80 is definitely sweater weather for me, too.

This knit would be 100% fine in my climate in Brisbane, Australia. I'd take a scarf, in case I got cold, but really it would be fine!
I'm chuckling along with the other Australians and Kiwis who have mastered the seasonally confused looks, lol. Brisbane is amazing in winter. You can see two friends walking along, one in a puffer and beanie, and the other in shorts, flip flops and a singlet top. It's bizarre. Sydney - where I am from - has a four season climate. Brisbane has hot, hotter, and confused!

Just remember scarves and booties signal Fall even if the weather is 80F. My college roommate was from SoCal, and couldn't fathom dressing for the weather - everything was tied to the calendar date instead!

Ha Gretchen! Some people here try to push fall too, just cause it's September then complain they're hot in their pants and sleeves.
And ha Shevia-they do same in Florida. Apparently 70 is puffer weather!

I am going to get a weird sort of vicarious pleasure out of watching what works for you in this climate. It won't be as extreme as what I would have felt if I still lived in frigid eastern Ontario, but still...following with interest.

In my climate, there are a few days that I can wear seasonally confused stuff, but not many. Generally, the transition to fall comes with large fluctuations in temperature--really hot days mixed with really cold, windy ones. We don't often get those nice midtemps where you can wear stuff like this.

S, Cal. Is certainly the land of mixed seasonal dress. I never understood sweatshirts worn with shorts and flip flops until living there. Remember that you will feel colder as the years go by.

FashIntern's 1 leg pants reminded me of another thing you can wear more than about 2 days a year like the rest of us-1 sleeve tops/dresses!
