scarves-what kind and how to

I have several scarves, but I have problems wearing them. With my short neck, big shoulders and bustiness, I look like a turtle in infinity scarves. Thicker ones ( or rather most others) with just one wrap around my neck make me look from the waist up , like a pea sitting on a potato. I love the look of scarves and how they can add color ad dress up an outfit. I found these and ordered them. they are only about 12 inches wide a and may work. If they do I will order more, as I can not find any anywhere else that are thin and narrow.

I too, love the idea (and look) of scarves with certain outfits and yet still get stymied sometimes on lengths, width, bulk and the fabrication--silky vs. wooly. And you've described the classic scarf-challenged figure!

Maybe you could play in the store at the scarf rack and figure out where you want the scarf to "hit" or fall re: your neck and bust and that would be individual for your own proportions. Also fine to order and play at home. You're trying to figure out how you want to wear it for the decorative aspect but with the right proportion. So it's both width--narrow does seem better, for less bulkiness--and also length, for how you want to drape or tie it and how much ends left over and all that. That means exploring scarf-tying options. Do you need the loose neck-tie tie or low square knot for lengthening/linear effects, or can you do other types if the scarf is narrow and lies flat.

I wonder about scarfs of a thin/drapey material but large rectangular cut that could be worn around the neck without looping, or with just one long loop and the ends hanging (like a very drapy cowl-neck). I'm thinking that anything that adds bulk or obscures the collar-bone/upper chest area is going to be harder to work with, but something open down the front sort of giving the impression of an open poncho or cardigan might be different.
